WorldCraft?!?!?!

by Anthony Rosenbaum · in General Discussion · 06/17/2002 (12:10 pm) · 30 replies

Well I finnally have gotten to a point where having an interior would be nice. However I head that the current WorldCraft is NOT supporting Torque. Is this True? If so does someone have a copy of the old worldcraft posted somewhere? If not what are my alternative? I heard about quark, is this a free program? If so where can I get a copy of it? Can anyone help ?!?!?!

Nick,

Yes you can tell from the torque files what editor created it. You could probally work to "hide" that but I don't want to even talk about that. Some turns in my stomach when I even think about changing code to "hide" the fact I did something I legally shouldn't be doing.

Its also VERY dangerous to assume what valve doesn't care. If they didn't "give a crap" they would have stated in their LICENSE "use it for anything you want. Commercial or otherwise. We don't care." Being they didn't they do care. To say they don't is silly to me.

Its best to just avoid the whole mess and go with Quark.

Edited for spelling and to add another thought.

How can you tell what editor was used from the files?

Oh , sorry. I'm just in a totally uncomfortable disagreement with the harsh edge of reality . I'm a big worldcraft user and after reading this post , I just tried Quark. I'm not a happy camper.

Use Tread 3D full source is avalible, and to hide what editor it came from, just open the .map file with a text editor and remove all of the things that state it was from hammer ;) (IF I HAVE VIOLATED SOMETHING JUST PLZ DELETE MY POST AND PLEASE DUN BAN ME)

You might try this resource to ease your WC-to-QuArK transition. It's pretty much a bunch of tweaks I had made to the QuArK settings, as well as convenience items like a stock default texture. It's set up to mimic WC/Hammer as closely as possible.

IMHO, QuArK is a far better tool overall, especially in microbrush hunting. It's behind WC in arches and some texture applying ease, but a little practice will get you around the latter.

It should be noted, in case others don't realize, that Desmond's QuArK installation tutorial is obsolete for later editions of QuArK, as he's on the QuArK team and the changes are now standard w/the program (with my neverdying gratitude :-) ).

If you ask me Valve is being pretty lame on this one. Counter-Strike (a mod) really pushed their company along for years after HL and TFC died out in large numbers. For them not to simply grant a right to create assets in their program is really disheartening. Wouldn't it benefit their modding community if more game developers used one tool?

Ah well Quark it is but I think Valve is missing the point here. Who knows they may miss the boat on the next CS mod due to this decision. It really would be nice to be able to create a mod for HL from assets that you already have created. With The editor issue this is just a fork in the road that may just send their next best game to another land altogether.

@Ryan C - they do grant you the right to create content so long as it is a mod for their engine and you publish through them (ala Counter-Strike), or, it is not a commercial project.

They are basically saying that if you use it to make money, they have to get a cut - either through royalties, or you purchasing a commercial copy of the HL engine.

@Chris "TribalMa5ter": As with any change of production application, it is a big shock to be dropped into another interface, especially one as obtuse as QuArK. It is a fairly powerful program despite what one's first impressions may be. Certainly no panacea, but it does its job. No real cure-all exists for interior editing as far as I know, they all kind of suck.
