My dream game....

Yo. Ok, first off, I'm new to the whole game development thing. I'm in school right now to earn two Bachelor's degrees, one in Game Art & Design, and one in Game Software Development. So I'm just tryin to get into communities like this and gain as much knowledge as I can, because I know nothing about programming and game engines and such. I've just discovered these forums, and I'll probably be trolling around here all the time now.
Anywaaaay, I though I'd start out by posting my dream game. And it's just that, a DREAM GAME. I know it's not really possible that this game ever comes to reality (because of licensing). But it's fun to dream......and discuss....
I want a 3D fighting/shooting game with all the popular video game characters. I wanna see fights like Link vs Cloud, Master Chief vs Samus, Dante vs Ryu Hayabusa, Snake vs Sam, etc. But here's the thing, I want each character to stay as true to their games as possible. For example: if you play as Master Chief you have to use first person view, and his controls would be as close to the Halo games as possible. You would also use the same health system and everything. It would be just like you're playing Halo, except you're fighting against different enemies. Then you could go play as Link, and assign weapons to different buttons, and do the auto jumping, and use "L-targeting," just like in the Zelda series. I think this would be a really cool idea. It would be the most diverse fighting game ever. Each character would be so unique, and would control so differently. But now of course this concept wouldn't apply to all characters. For instance Cloud Strife doesn't have a real set of controls to go by. So perhaps his would be a combination of FF7, Kingdom Hearts, and Ehrgeiz. Certain characters like that would have original controls.
But what really interests me in this whole idea, is to see the top players from different games battle it out. Imagine the best Halo player in the world going up against the best Ninja Gaiden player in the world. Wouldn't that be sweet? See the whole concept behind this, is to make players good with their respective characters. So if you're good at Devil May Cry, then you're gonna be good with Dante in this game. If you're good at Splinter Cell, you're gonna be good with Sam Fisher in this game, and so on. And also, this game would be great for settling those age old "who would win" debates.
And whether they end up liking it or not, so many people would buy this game. The Halo fans are gonna buy it cuz a Master Chief, the Zelda fans are gonna buy it cuz a Link, and so on. I mean I bought Soul Calibur 2 just because of Link, and I didn't really like it all that much, but I still bought it, just like almost every other Zelda fan did. And see here's the thing, the Halo fan would buy the game and play as MC. He would feel at home and comfortable, and would be happy with the controls for his character. Most likely, he's gonna play as MC primarily whenever he plays this game, because that's what he's used to and that's the kinda gameplay he likes. He doesn't have to worry about the controls for other characters. He's a Halo player. For him, the game would be like the next Halo, except he's just fighting against completely different enemies. This concept would hold true for every character. A lot of people would be very happy and satisfied.

Well I wouldn't want any unlockable characters, but if there were, do you really think MC should be one? I mean, with gameplay in mind, there's several other characters that would be much better then MC in my opinion. I'm almost certain a good Metroid Prime player, or Devil May Cry player, or Ninja Gaiden player would beat a good Halo player. But see that's just my opinion. Somebody else may think totally different. This is what makes the characters special. Let's say we have the greatest Halo player in the world here. He's won all these tournaments, ranked number one in the world, nobody can beat him. He thinks he's untouchable. And then you have the greatest Ninja Gaiden player in the world. He's won the "Master Ninja Tournament," is #1 online, has accomplished every feat imaginable in the game. He also thinks he's untouchable. Now they meet, and the Halo player says to the NG player, "dude, I would so kill you if I was playin as Master Chief and you were playin as Ryu." And the NG player says, "what? No way! Nobody can beat me! I would destroy you!" And they get into a heated argument about who would actually win, but they would never be able to settle it.
((Here's an example of a debate like this I thought I should post, pitting Ryu vs Dante. It's really interesting. They get really into the gameplay mechanics and everything.)
Call me nerdy, but that's what really intrigues me. Just for that factor alone I would want this game. Just to settle those arguments, to see the matchups between different players from different games. That would make the game worth it for me. I duno, it's a just thing I have for seeing good matchups. I just love seeing the best vs the best, in anything, whether it's video games, movies, sports, comics. I have a friend who's really good at basketball, but he doesn't like to play anymore, especially 1on1 games. And I've actually PAYED him to play other people 1on1, just so I could see who would win. It just excites me. But I dunno. Maybe I'm just weird.
Yea with user made skins/models/controls/camera views/camera systems/combat systems/weapons/abilities.
And to Kristian- that was definitely informing. Now I know.
But so what if, say, over like the next five or six years me and my small team make this game, without permission. Then when it's finished we go on a big advertising spree, showing every forum possible our finished product, and let everybody download it for free. We keep our site up until the companies tell us to stop distributing it. So we do, but many people already downloaded the game, and they're all playing it online. What could the companies do?

Quote:What if Master Chief was an unlockable character? This could possibly add a little more balance to the game, as well as adding replay value. Also, for situations like when Sam grabs Link, those could trigger context-sensitive actions. For example, if Sam did grab Link by the throat, the player could punch in a combo to break free of Sam's grip and temporarily stun him.
Quote:I don't recognise many of those characters and don't see what makes the ones I do recognise special.

Well... maybe nothing... and maybe they say, wow that was cool, let's hire them... and maybe they sue you and your team, for breaking trademark/copyright law... who knows...

i know that when DJ's use samples illegally to come up with the next great dance song, they send it to all the underground clubs and when it becomes really, really popular in clubs, the record labels usually give them permission to keep the song in rotation. I really doubt it would be the same with illegal content in games, but then again I really don't know.

Balance would just be an issue of trial and error for each character.
For example: Master Chief would primarily be a medium/long range character his melee attack could be "dumbed down" a bit, whereas Link and Ryu would be dominators at close range with weak medium range, Snake and Sam would have to be a combo of medium range(weaker weapon damage perhaps?) and EXTREMELY close range(the problem would be balance wise is people running head first as Sam or Snake).
Just some thoughts on what could make this balanced...
Oh yeah, One shot to the head kill(as far as this game cares) = unfair.

It could be possible to "tweak" the characters, so it looks similar to the original, but not exactly. Then change the name a tad. For example, you could change Master Chief's helmet design, and call him "Chieftain" or something like that. They can't get you on copyright infringement (I think, correct me if I'm wrong), and as long as the controls aren't changed, the game will stay true to the original concept.

btw, Master Chief vs Link, I'd have to go with link.
You may die a hundred times in the Halo campaign, but I found myself only dying 2 or 3 times whilst playing Zelda.

Yeah, you'd be safe if you made a green trooper and called him Chieftain, or like a pixie named Liep, rather than link.btw, Master Chief vs Link, I'd have to go with link.

Quote:You may die a hundred times in the Halo campaign, but I found myself only dying 2 or 3 times whilst playing Zelda. That doesn't say anything. It's a measure of the different difficulties of the games and their mechanics, the differences between the two genres, and the competence of the players, rather than how tough the characters themselves are. Certainly, I haven't died playing on Easy, except through my own faults/stupidity (if anyone else can run themselves over with a Warthog, please let me know...).

So, obviously, you know of course that your specific idea won't work. I'm not bashing your idea, just saying that I don't care how much money you have, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony will never sell the rights to their exclusives. There is more to money behind this. There is the essential survival of the console. If Halo didn't exist, or even more interesting, if it had been released on the Mac like it should have been originally, how would the Xbox launch have gone? When you get down to it, the big difference between the systems is more than just their power. Yes, xbox looks shinier than the gamecube, but it doesn't matter as much for many people as everyone thinks. What it is, is the games you can offer. I'll buy a PS3, if it has Metal Gear Solid 4, the next Ace Combat, if Assassin's Creed were exclusive to it, and it has Lair, and other games. but if all the games were on all systems? Screw that, I'm getting a Wii. So no way are they gonna sell their rights, even if Gates tried to buy them. Well, obviously, especially if Gates tried. Besides, the question becomes, what console would host the game? All of them? Cuz they obviously won't agree. Then you're trying to get a game with multiple genres and control settings across multiple console configurations and controllers.
HOWEVER
I like the gist of it. I do think that the idea has merit. The concept, to cross genres and styles all across the board into a fighting or strategy game is a truly original and intriguing idea. Even within the genre of "fighter game", some people take well to certain control schemes or character types. For instance; my friend Matt can wipe the floor with just about any of our local friends at Super Smash Bros. His sister is just as good, and she's also really good at Bloody Roar. To say I suck at Bloody Roar would be to the call the ocean a puddle. However, we plug in Guilty Gear? I am king.
So it would be interesting. You could have more generic 'versions' of these gaming icons. The beat up soldier FPS, the speedy ninja, the 3rd person fighter, etc. Although, the barrier between 2D and 3D games would be an interesting barrier... anyway. So I like the idea. I guess I'll actually be helpful, now, and answer your questions.
Do you think this game would succeed even if there were some major balance issues? (like 2 or 3 characters dominating the rest at high level play)
Well, in many multiplayer games you could argue close to none are truly "balanced". Some characters are simply designed better, though in 99.9% of the time, if you lose it's just because the other player is better than you. but even if a few characters dominated, and even a noob could use them and win.. well, dont use them. Look at Soul Caliber III. Does anyone consider Abyss, fair? No. Do serious gamers that want to play honorably use him against a non-Abyss? No. A good example, take CounterStrike. One of the rifles, known as the AWP, is widely considered an unbalanced weapon. People either play and get over it ["Learn to exploit its weakness'"] or they just don't use it, either as an unspoken rule or an actual modification.
Would you buy this game? And enjoy it? I would buy it simply on its originality, and I'm sure it would have more going for it.
Do you like this idea? If not, why? What would you do to improve it? I more or less answered this already. To improve it, you would have to get a concrete idea of how it would mesh with the different genres. The levels would have to be designed so that, say, Sam Fisher-type characters could use their environment to their advantage and be sneaky, without handicapping Master Chief types.
Is this game (or a simple form of it) actually possible to make as a small independent game? I don't know a whole lot about the logistics of the programming details here, but somehow, I think not.
And, if this game was actually made, who do you think would be the best character? Which character would you play as to give you the best chance of winning?
Unfair question. Some characters are so totally different that you can't really compare them. Everyone would just pick their favorites.

You make some valid points in your post. Creating more generic characters, possibly even characters who look similar to the original, could get you around all that legal stuff. As long as the controls remain the same, it shouldn't matter, right? And I totally agree with what you said about balance. Can any of this actually be done, though? I have no clue. I guess it's possible, but you have to have plenty of dedication to pull it off.

Well the rights wouldn't be bought permanently. It would only be for this one game. So it's not like Xbox wouldn't have Halo anymore, or Nintendo wouldn't have Zelda anymore. And the game could work on all systems, (you'd have to use the gamecube controller for Wii though). The Nintendo fans will still buy their Wii, Xbox fans would still buy the 360, and Playstation fans would still buy the PS3. Then they would just go and pick up this game for their system, because of their character in it.
But, still, I know that this would never happen. It would take somebody very rich to do this. Or, if like, the world was coming to an end, maybe all the developers would get together and make this game, since everybody's about to die anyway.....
Aw but that's the funnest part, trying to compare the characters and predicting who would be better. Let's say this game actually comes out, and you're about to play me in it. For both of us it's our first time playing. BUT, let's say I have a gun pointed at your head, and if you lose to me, you die. Who would you pick if your life depended on it?
Yea but would you dumb down all of Master Chief's close range attacks? I mean he has the deadly energy sword, a shotgun, the brute shot, and of course the rocket launcher. Those are all great close range weapons. Master Chief would have to be an all around character, and several other characters would be as well. And yea I was thinkin the one headshot kills could be unfair, but I dunno. Maybe two headshots to kill? But with MC in mind, ya know, his sniper kills another spartan with one headshot, so it would be kinda weird not be able to kill Snake or Sam with one headshot too, when they don't even have a helmet on or anything. And also, it would be much harder to connect a headshot with some of the characters like Dante and Ryu, who can all jump and roll around, and make quick little evasive maneuvers. But with those two characters it would be perfectly believable that one headshot doesn't kill them anyway, since Dante actually takes a bullet to the head in his game and lives, and Ryu can actually get his throat slit in his game and still live.

Ok, so seriously then? Well it would depend. I'll only use characters on your list, since to choose ANY game character would be nigh impossible. From a logical stand point, either Kratos after he becomes the God of War, cuz then I'd have God Mode, or Dante because despite having a 'health bar' the guy is mostly immortal. You see him take scythes through the chest and bullet through the head without worry. However, from a 'fun' perspective, I'd take Snake cuz I could run around in his box and no one would see me.
and I still push the point that money couldn't buy you even temporary rights to the characters to make this game.
Also, you mentioned how it wouldn't make sense for headshots not to work cuz some characters like Snake wouldn't have a helmet?
Ok, look at fighting games.
Is it really that realistic that in Soul Calibur, you are beating each other to death with [usually] huge, sharp, metal swords/spears/staffs/etc and no bones are broken, no skin is torn? Yeah. Don't worry about the logistics of it.
and i dont see why you couldnt have headshots. even in Halo, you can try to be a 'melee' person with the energy sword, and you just run the risk of getting clipped by a sniper. So either headshots would have to be very difficult, or taken off. but then, what about Link's bow getting headshots? or instant kills by the ninja characters? so there would be a lot of balancing to be done.

If I had no choice, and i HAD to pick a character, or you'd shoot me... I'd say "Hey, look, a conveniently placed distraction" and run while you weren't looking ;)Ok, so seriously then?

Imagine your Halo characters, Joanna Dark and a Rainbow Six squad going to infiltrate Dr. Robotnik?! Funny stuff!

I dreampt up a game a long time ago based on using multiple Nintendo game characters in a Lost Vikings style adventure game where each brings their own strengths and weaknesses and the game revolves around them working together to advance in the game world, which consisted of obsticals and power-ups from all the different games. 3 years later, we had the first Smash Bros.!Imagine your Halo characters, Joanna Dark and a Rainbow Six squad going to infiltrate Dr. Robotnik?! Funny stuff!

Except that this game and the one you're describing have very different ideals. Halo, Dark, and Six infiltrating would be a first person, likely squad based shooter, a specific genre. What Jeremy's getting at is crossing the boundaries between genres, not just stacking a few games together.

And yea, I suppose I shouldn't worry about the logistics so much. It's just I would want each character to be as true to their original form as possible. See, when you play Halo, the sniper kills with one headshot. So then imagine if you come play this game, and say both players pick Master Chief. It would be just like their playing Halo, except with different levels. But it would be weird if they weren't able to kill each other with one headshot, but...I dunno. It wouldn't really matter I guess. Or you could give Master Chief an overshield, then it would make sense.
Also, headshots would be very difficult against some characters, like I said, some of them can jump so much more quickly, and roll, and dodge, and block, and reflect, and camouflage, (or hide in boxes). So headshots would be no easy task. But, certain characters definitely shouldn't die in one headshot, but I just really don't know about the rest.

They should just be almost as powerful as they were in their normal mode, so no God modes, or super Dantes with unlimited devil trigger. And also, while Dante is seemingly immortal in cutscenes, in gameplay he is far from it. And that's what you have to go by.

First step, to be on the safe side, i don't know for sure if you can use the names, and it's still better to be on the safe side, i'll use MC as my example since he seems to be the running example. Another way to say master could be Lord, and Chief is one letter away from Chef, so you could turn him into Lord Chef, who's melee wepon would now be a glowing energy meat cleaver.
Also, physically making them have a striking likeness, possibly exagerating certain features, would help keep you safe.
Then, for example, Snake could become instantly invisible if he gets in his box, but can't really see where he's going(leaving great opportunity for walking off cliffs). To kind of make fun of how a conspicuously placed box goes unnoticed in the world of Metal Gear.
(btw, that's just my impression of Snake's box, i am actually a sad sole who has never played MG)
Doing something of this sort should, or maybe i'm better off saying COULD, keep you safe. Remember, these guys who's IP you feel like ripping off have a LOT of money to hire lawyers with if they feel their IP and/or money is in any way endangered. If you are inventive enough, you could draw people just through humor and interesting jokes. That's besically what parodies arre all about.
Anyways.... that's the only way I personally could see this getting done. Also, you would probably need quite a bit of funding for such a large endeavour, maybe a scaled down version with like the 8 most popular characters you could think of could work. Oh and some huge balls for doing something that could land you owing a pile of money the size of Everest. Meaning the sum total of all the mass in your scrotum would have to equal the entire Himalayas. Or your brain has to be equal to that of a Tic's so that you can ignore all of the legal issues. LOL, i'm not implying you're an idiot btw. I'm just trying to make it VERY clear how risky i think this is.

Damn, Ryan and Maxwell got to it before me. But here's my two cents on the subject they brought up. If you're ripping them off directly, there may be some questionability. BUT, if it's an obvious parody/joke sort of thing, you could even use the names. Because parodies and review sorts of things are protected as free speech. You just have to be REALLY inventive in proving it's a parody instead of a total rip-off.First step, to be on the safe side, i don't know for sure if you can use the names, and it's still better to be on the safe side, i'll use MC as my example since he seems to be the running example. On the topic of balance, I think that whatever can hurt/kill the character in the original game should hurt/kill the character in this game. For example, MC would die from a headshot. Link wouldn't. Sam Fisher can die from a headshot. Snake could go either way.

I definitely think this sort of game is possible, but you just got to be damn sure you've covered EVERY legal aspect. Creating the game itself shouldn't be too hard. Just the balance and stuff. On the topic of balance, I think that whatever can hurt/kill the character in the original game should hurt/kill the character in this game.
