Grimm's Hatchery

After several months, my casual game is almost ready! Okay, so there aren't any chickens in it, but there are lots of geese, weird creatures, and monsters to keep players busy. The goal of the game is to start a pet empire. The player gets to buy, hatch, and sell pets and eggs. There is also a pet lab where the player can attempt to create new species of pets.

You can learn more about the game here.

The game is in beta right now, but here are a couple of screens:

Neato. I like the main art assets, but more than those, I'm positively loving the interface elements. :)

Very Nice! I heard you on the indie game developer podcast a few months back syaing you were using TGB for your next project. I'm glad it's almost done. Congrats!

The quality of your background/environment illustrations is excellent, a very pleaseant feeling of light and shade. Given the lush way the grass is drawn it's a shame the characters don't sink into it...

Thank you everyone!

@Matthew, I'll fix the lush grass/floating guy problem before the game ships. I completely missed that!

Very very lovely, I absolutely love the art style. The numbers do stick out like a sore thumb though.. They'd look cool as wrought iron instead of flat black.

Will definitely be keeping an eye out for this.

@Simon
Do you know of a good font that achieves the effect you are speaking of? I still have a little bit of time to jazz things up. :)

BTW, I really do love the art style, but only one thing "jars" my viewing pleasure:

The character avatars appear very paper-doll, as if they were cut and paste on top of the scene. I think it's due to a possible 1 pixel border, or no AA, but it's hard to tell.

Of course if that's what you're looking for, you did a great job achieving it!

Stephen, could be because they have no shadows, while everything else in the scene has. It struck me too, perhaps its possible to add them, if light sources are more or less consistent in all the scenes? Other than that, really eyes-pleasing art, me likey.

After seeing Nauris' post, I think he hit it on the head: no shadowing on the main characters. I can't think of any immediate techniques to do it dynamically, but You could get maybe a bit of shadowing in just in the texture itself if you think it would benefit :)

Amaranthia,

Looks amazing! Love the "save the farm" idea!

I think Simon was refering to the color, not the font. The font fits your style, the black seems a little harsh and a iron color (dark grey maybe) would pop out less.

Not sure how your using the characters but one option might be to attach a shadow object (if nothing but a shadowy transparency around their feet elongated to sun orientation of scene.. if they are static). Would keep you from having to redo the art with shadows.

Sorry I was unclear.. Tank got it right.
I pretty much just meant that the pure black was standing out.
With your screenshots all the colors are nice and warm and even the darkest shadows in the painting are full of warmth.
So maybe a nice warm grey (#615A4E maybe) if you want to complement the rest of the image.
Or as I originally suggested, more of a cold iron color to contrast (#55505E perhaps)
Maybe even let a little of the background texture show through by making it a touch transparent even.

Good idea Simon, I'll make the change and see how it turns out!

Pretty much all of Amaranthia's art brings tears of joy to my eyes . . .
