A Student with Hopes and Dreams

Hello Everyone,

My name is Michael Welch. I am currently a student at ITT Technical Intstitute, pursuing a degree in Digital Entertainment and Game Design. I am interested in 3d modelling as a career but would like to explore other areas of game design and development. I have a few ideas for games that I would like to begin working on as Independant games. Some that are smaller, simpler games and others that, at this point seem much more challening.

I have some experience programming, animating, and modelling, and as I progress through school I hope to greatly improve all of these skills with great focus on modelling.

What I was wondering is if there is anyone here at GG that would mind dedicating themselves, from time to time, to answer specific questions that I may have on more private terms, and can send my work to to have critiqued, etc. I realize that many of you are extremely busy doing what you do and being dedicated members to this site. An appreticeship, of sorts, is what I'm looking for, as the forums here can be a bit overwhelming. I am looking for someone to be a 'go-to guy (or girl)' of sorts. One who is knowledgeable in many areas and whom I can depend on to 'give it to me straight' and to help whenever I hit roadblocks.

In doing this I am also trying to network myself into this community as well as the industry in general. I realize that this is a very important part of becoming successful in this industry.

I want to thank anyone in advance for taking the time to read this and respond.

"dedicating" is a scary word. You're right, I'm way busier than I should be. . .between developing professionally by day, and working on my own Indie project by night, I'm probably working myself into an early grave.

However, feel free to shoot me any questions you might have.

Also, there are plenty of general forums here and on sites like GameDev, that you can post questions and submit work. I find GG community members tend to offer more constructive criticism, when compared to a few other sites where you'll get flamed and criticized without warrant.

Feel free to shoot me any question you may have. I keep a database of questions and answers on the Torque 1.4, 1.4.2, 1.5.0, TLK 1.4 and TGB. Also on Milkshape, Gamespace, Truespace, 3ds Max, Lightray3d, Poser and PSP.

Thank you both for responding.

@ Michael Perry -- I didn't mean to scare anyone by saying "dedicating". I meant it in the loosest way possible. Like I said, I am still a student and thus also very busy but would like to start getting my hands dirty. I am simply looking for someone who can help me on a more personal level. I don't fancy the idea of putting myself out there in front of some high and mighty ass. I also don't like having to sift through a bunch of stuff to figure out what is right and what is wrong. I, like yourself don't have a lot of time between school, work, and family. I try to spend what time I have for the craft as efficiently as possible.

@ Fucifer -- I'll keep this in mind as I'm sure I'll have many questions. Thanks so much.

Thanks again to the both of you.

Allright boy , i think the forum over here is really good , but to help you out more and to get more i suggest you to go to other forum where you can post image and render and get pretty good advice on whatever you make.

the first site i alway suggest is this site one (a pretty good board by the way and really immersed in game modeling)

polycount and go in forum ; pimping and preview. that the place to post your sreen/render

the second one is cgsociety and cgtalk(cgtalk is the forum of cgsociety) :

computer graphic society
computer graphic talk

the third one is "the area" made by autodesk (3dsmax maker) but its pretty new!!! came out about 2 month ago i think not sure , its a board and tutorial based site about 3dsmax!!!

the area

you can find more over the net but those one are pretty good!!!

Hi Michael

I have years of experience in the Industry - my background is mainly art (3D), although I have branched out into Design and Managerial roles.

As regard to art - get an online portfolio - as 'Bad_Mofo' said CGSociety and Polycount are great starting points.
I would also get a personal website (I wish I did this years ago) to show off work and attract employers.

In the nine or so years I have been a fully paid up pro the differentiation in art roles within the Industry has went crazy- we have guys specialising in ONLY concepts, lighting, effects, pipelines, or even specific modelling tasks. There are loads of very interesting skills you can pick up in time, the first thing you should concentrate on is a quality portfolio and good working knowledge of any package you feel comfortable with. You will use a multitude of different tools and apps over the years so get used to learning

Good luck
