Problem with dragon ball Z is its copyrighted material...
Also, DBZ games tend to suck big time, but that could be just my opinion.
Anyway.. want to play some dragon ball games... there are some good mods out there for Half life, Quake 3 (perhaps even Unreal, I dunno)

Dragonball Z is a license which has failed at least one time when put into a game.

The reason it hasn't been tried again, is because the person who owns the right to the kiddie cartoon is very cautious and rather dissapointed with how the previous game faired in sales.

There's always going to be a few people saying "make a Dragonball Z game, it'll sell millions" when the license holder knows for a fact that that isn't true.

If it were unlike the games based on it in the past (which where total crap), it would sell millions.

Side Note: There's a DBZ game out for GBAdvanced right now.

why would you have to use the DBZ liscense? Why not just create a game with the same basic premise? All original characters, original races, original moves and such - and just through it into a 3d fighting game.

Have destructable terrain, like mountains and trees and buildings and such. Have water effects and stuff when projectiles cut through it, or when people fly over it.

This kind of game would require an average amount of artwork, but would allow huge use of other effects, because of the low amount of players on screen, and simplistic level art. Forests, canyons, plains, etc. Then we could all start taking advantage of phils new effect stuff he has been working on - and just pump every other aspect of the engine.

I think it would be a pretty solid idea - if the gameplay was implemented correctly. The art would be the simple part, however - 3d fighters are hard to implement good control schemes into... who knows?

I have been wanting to do something like this for a while...

A Quake 3 mod somewhat like this already exists, called 'Bid for Power'. Originally it was going to be a DBZ mod until the team received a cease and desist order from Funimation. A perfect (if mild) example of the trouble people can get into when using copyrighted material.

Its funny...at one time, Funimation was looking for someone to make a DBZ game. I remember asking them about this early on, when they purchased the rights to Dragonball, asking them about the possibility of creating a game.

If you haven't seen, here's what the PS2 looks like so far:

Pretty bad..they'll probably cel-shade it or something. I wouldn't be suprised.

Its also interesting that they went after the guys that did Bid For Power, when there are like 3 or so HL mods based on DBZ...BFP was the most visible I guess :/

I also agree that you should make a game on an original concept. You'll have a lot less trouble...

Oh, and there were some decent DBZ games. I was able to get most of those :)
