3DSMAX and Skins - Torque DTS

Here's what I'm trying to do:
We have purchased the Soldier Pack and it comes with some very nice .max files. The DTS exporter plug-in works perfectly for these .max files in 3dS MAX 6.
I'm trying to import a 3ds model and replace it as the skin. Unfortunately when I delete the Soldier skin, import the .3ds and try to set the mesh as the new skin (Modifiers>Animation Modifiers>Skin) it does not work. The only thing that gets exported in the .dts is the skeleton.
When I try to "Renumber Selection", "Embed Shape", then "Export:WholeShape", I get the error message:
"Skin found on linked node "Body" -- skin must be unlinked."
I know that I am simply doing something procedurally wrong. Can any of you experienced folks out there point me in the right direction? Any link at all would be much appreciated!

Ifn ya still have trouble you best show us a screeny of the nodestructure and hierarchy. I dont have the Soldier packs, but I assume if all yer doing is exchanging the mesh then all the other needed parts are already setup. Otherwise: holler. ;)

The hierarchy is all correctly there and the mesh is linked to the bones. I think I was just missing the dummy node for the detail. I will try this later today and let you know how it went.
Torque Owner Thak
Name the model "mynewskinname"8 create a detail8 dummy. Link the dummy to the Bip01 root node. Do not link the mesh to anything.
export whole shape. ;)
