What do you think of TGE 1.4.2/1.5

by Max · in Torque Game Engine · 11/07/2006 (6:02 am) · 13 replies

I personally think it did more harm than good. I got the 1.4.2 update and it was very unstable and crashed a lot.

As for the 1.5 update, I got the demo, it looks really good, but is even more unstable than 1.4.2.

So far I think people are better off with 1.4 until the later versions are stabilized.

Thats my two cents, wheres yours?

I like 1.4.2 and haven't had any problems with it at all. I 'ported' my 1.4 code and scripts over without any problems and some cool benefits.

Can't say about 1.5 since I haven't upgraded yet.

"Crashes alot" is quite vague. Where does it crash? I'm too running 1.4.2 and it works just fine.

When I said that, I meant in general. Mostly in editors.

You can't really make statements like this without backing it up.

Again another statement with no merit.

This is just plain wrong. You have had the engine for what 5 months?

I can't believe I even posted to this!!

I've had great success so far with 1.5. I didn't have any problems with 1.4.2 when I grabbed it out of CVS, either. Maybe my project is much simpler than yours (actually, I'm betting it is).

For me Torque 1.5.0 run alot alot better then Torque 1.4.2. I have export my project over and works outstanding. There only problems that is with a trigger. I have test about half the resources that I put together for my Beginner Guide so far all have work with 1.5.0 with no changes.

I havent tested 1.4 or 1.4.2 due to the unicode problem in win98, but my project isnt working correctly under 1.5. im glad they created a fix for the unicode crash in win98 and I see that 1.5 is a big improvement. I'll be using it for most of my projects in the future, but I'm going to have to go with an earlier version for my current game. my current game uses setvelocity() alot, and I'm getting a strange upward drift when I run the game under 1.5. on the other hand, I think I'm getting slightly better performance under 1.5.

I asked where. Crashing generally is no different from any other type of crash as you still get the callstack. Provide one instead of pointless accusations.

Maxwell Marsh:
Can you supply more info. Like system setup,Platform,VC6 VC7 VC8, Engine mods etc..

Because i have no problems at all and i use a heavy modded VC7 compiled version of TGE 1.5.

Well for 1.5 he said he got the demo, so I'd assume that he can't get a callstack from there.
but yeah more info on the 1.4.2 crashes would be nice in case it helps us out, or we can tell you where something was fixed.

I've been very reluctant to upgrade any of my 1.3 based code. Once I finally got my 1.3 app to a state where all the bugs that were stopping me were ironed out, I really did not want to introduce more. I'm in the process of bringing over most of the world editor from 1.4.2 and doing that has been very worth it. The new features in the guitreeviewcontrol are worth it to me. But you may already have those in 1.4 I don't know.

it might also just be that you had a bad merge with 1.4.2?

Since this is a public forum and people might be deciding about TGE just want to add that if I were starting my game now, and did not already have a codebase built on tge1.3 I would definitely start with 1.5.

The only reason I am reluctant to upgrade is because I want to work on my game and not spend time merging / risk adding new bugs. What I have works and I like to keep making progress on that, unless there is something I really need like the mission editor improvements.

Agreed. Time is essential and spending it where it's most needed is crucial to finishing your game. If I were to start over I would use 1.5.
