Deconstructing a 'pathed lightning' effect

World of Warcraft has this cool effect used while Draining that resembles a twisting glowing lightning bolt that reaches the distance from caster to target.
I have considered reproducing it with a complex node algorithm but wonder if I am missing an easier way, perhaps with shaders or something... any thoughts?
