C4 Engine/Wow

by Morrie · in General Discussion · 09/30/2006 (10:12 pm) · 37 replies

I own TGE/TSE and just was curious what the big HYPE on the C4 Engine was. WOW it seems incredible, I has an editer, it has exports for XSI, its like owning an engine that when I bought TGE would provide.

Soon GG will hopefully provide these tools (constructor, XSI exporters), but for now the C4 engine has it all I can't believe the it and now I don't have the money to purchase it for $100. Hopefully they won't raise it too high in price, because I would like to get it.

C4's a great engine which is still being put through its paces. The rendering technology is excellent and requires high-end cards to utilize. Eric is working hard to make a damn fine engine. And it's definitely getting there (in fact, there are a lot of great elements about it right now).

Unfortunately, you seem to be putting the cart before the horse with your comments about the ediitors and application support. The editor is in a rudimentary state, though quite functional. It reminds me in many ways of the default editor for Genesis 3D. It is, however, not on the level of Quark or Constructor (and to be honest, Eric has been working on the engine more than editor tech; but needed a firm and simple way to get content into the engine). It is functional but not really that intuitive yet. But then, the engine in its current state is a programming API which is extremely clean and usable. It is currently made for C++ programmers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it should definitely be noted in a discussion about artflow.

From what I understand (and I do not use XSI), the Collada support for XSI is very good, which would make getting model content into and out of the engine extremely easy. Perhaps if I have the time, I'll take my strip club environment out of TGE, shader it up, and put it into TSE and C4 to play with the artflow of each. But since I work predominantly on a Mac and Collada export is currently not supported by the developers (of Collada, not C4), I may have some difficulty getting it output in C4. But it would be fun to play with both because I'm an eternal tinkerer.

Even though I downloaded the latest build, I haven't had a chance to sit and play with it. I am hoping to at some point because it has amazing potential. It, as well as Torque products and Unity, is on my list of engines which I advocate. It is, however, still in its early stages. There's some great stuff on the way, though.

Well if you ( you in general) didn't buy C4 before today you missed a great deal.
Yesterday was the last day you could buy C4 for $100 with unlimited updates for ever.
A super deal considering how good C4 is shaping up and how often eric keeps updating it

From today the price is $200 per user and I think $50 every 6 months of updates... still a great deal considering the quality and roadmap of C4 development and that works with Collada so no messing around with dodgy pipelines.

C4 is the best $100 I ever spent.

When did you purchase C4, Hokuto? What's your C4 username or is that classified information ;)

Nevermind I found ya.

Well I guess I'll just stick to Torque since I have pay for updates any way I go. The difference is GG gives the updates in a whole package for $25. Think about it thats a $75 difference a year. I'm pretty content with TSE right now, and I don't want to $100 a year for updates. There are cheaper engines than that, that are just as good any ways TSE/TGE. I was messing with the demo from C4 and it kept crashing, thats why I didn't buy it last night.

I've even seen some free engine under development that will do the same thing. TSE/TGE just keeps getting better and better. I have a feeling that the XSI exporter will be out soon and I don't think Constuctor due for release untill 2007(don't quote me on Constuctor, but I think I read this one a Constuctor forum somewhere.)

I cant understand why you guys keep on babbling about C4, if you want a real engine other then TSE or TGE take a look at LawMaker www.darkroomstudios.com I bought a commercial license and its worth every $$$$

@Alienforce

I see they have finally updated their site. It definately looks like a great engine with some great editors. Let us know how the engine is. Too bad they don't have a downloadable demo.

Request a evaluation SDK, join the forum. I really dont want to start another "flamewar" here.
I am totally satisfied with my choice of engines TGE,TBG for casual game projects and TSE for future projects.
LawMaker is nearest i can come today to for license a Doom3,Quake4 or Unreal3 engine since they are to expensive.

LawMaker is $1500, TSE is $1000 and TSE looks better.

You cant compare engines like that, sorry its like comparing apples and oranges.
TSE is great and LawMaker is great its not the same thing.

@Alienforce

How is the art pipeline? How do the editors compare to UnrealED?

@Alienforce

I too own a commercial License of LawMaker and I also think it was worth every penny. I can't say enough good things about those guys or their engine.

@Marcus

Actually to "me" the editor reminds me of UnrealED's editor. They have video tutorials up explaining the editor, but I dont know if they're for public use or not yet.

As for the pipline I know it uses Max cause thats what I use, but I heard on the forums they also use Maya, Milkshape and Blender and I hear Lightwave is in the works which for these guys isnt very long.

Can I export XSI into LawMaker and do I get the source code, also do I get unlimited downloads.

This is like an advertisement for C4. Im not nearly as P.C. as you guys, so to be honest I think C4 has a long way to go (and I mean compared to anything let alone tge or tse) sorry man that thing is in its way early infancy stages.

and frankly its not even close (at least not yet) to what is currently available with tge/tse/lawmaker, etc.

please stop the hype, its good to support the stuff you respect but lets be realistic, its not an engine thats ready for any real production environment. eventually maybe as it is coming along nicely (hey have to give props the guy is working really hard on it), but lets not go crazy just yet.

Slightly offtopic, what is P.C.? :P

That lawmaker looks like an updated version of genesis3D. Even the editors.

(That was not posed as a good or bad thing)
