I am calling it right here. I think all the charts are about to blow off the scale.
Several events are intersecting here.. Moore's law guiding them all.
1. New CPU's.
2. New GPU's.
3. New memory.
All on better production methods.
4. Windows Vista.
5. Apple's switch to X86 little endian.
6. 500+ Gig drives.
7. Youtube... etc. people acting like streaming was just invented but will want more power from
above 1-6. (industry trend)
Hold on folks... let's get rich together!! Here comes the Tsunami of new Gamer PC's..

But when are these machines will be upgraded? I guess within 3 to 5 years, not before.
Another point: Macintosh users tend to keep their computers longer than PC users with 3 years vs 1 year for PC users.
I personally still own my Texas Instrument Ti99A4 from 1983 (but it's screwed up), my first Macintosh Performa from 1994, the next one from 1996, the iBook G4 from last year and the current iMac that's 2 months old.
And my home build PC from 2000, with Windows 2000 Pro and my old Radeon 7500 and AMD Thunderbird 1.2 on an Asus 7A. And yes, I keep playing games on it.

Perhaps they are using Sony batteries?
But in reality, I read an interesting article that claimed that PC gaming was just as big as it ever was. Just that revenues are dropping at stores because distribution is moving online. Sounds valid to me.

Anyways, PC gaming is going nowhere, it will just get better (even if not, it will never die). At least we can update few things and play latest games compared to console owners who are pretty much stick with what they bought ultimately forcing them to buy a better machine year after year. As for me, I milk my machines for years, my last proper upgrade was last year only, before that, I was running every game on my 9600XT (even Doom3) on highest quality without buying into that 'upgrade your dc because our new one has 2 more pipelines' crap.
Right now, looking forward to playing "next-gen games" on my 6800GS.. for next 2 years until I bother upgrading.

Anyone upgrading to Vista will obviously upgrade his/her PC to the 'recommended' status for all PC Games these days automatically. While those of us who are happy with XP, will stick with it ultimately forcing MS to bring DirectX 10 to XP as well :PAnyways, PC gaming is going nowhere, it will just get better (even if not, it will never die). Will computer games explode before then, no. there arn't many new cpus coming out anytime soon and if you noticed the market slowed down, they're reaching the end of the span of just make everything smaller so we can fit more on one chip capability and now have to decide the next generation of computing. There is some great research into using the direction an electron is facing to use that as the data so instead of binary you could have 0 through as good as the reader is in number of directions. Now just imagine that power increase but until they get it built and standardized computer power is going to level off. This could be good however because the people who hat eto upgrade can finally do it cheap and not worry about a big jump coming too soon. That could make more people able to play all the games out there. But too many gamers are going to consoles for pc games to burst out

I have to highly disagree with the poster. If anything I think in another decade or so we will start seeing specialized computers and here's why, with consoles (xbox 360 ps2 wtc) getting stronger and stronger, more and more computer like. I believe there will eventuall be a portable gaming computer that is basically a console, it will have controllers and mouse and joystick. Sales of consoles are constantly amazing and they are all now high speed interent equipped with amazing processors and graphic cards, only thing keeping them from being a computer now is they all make their own operating methods so they can have exclusive games. But the day will come when that's all gamers have both computer and console gamers alike, and with the nice plasma tvs that are selling like crazy everyone will have nice screens too. But regular computers that we know only smaller will sill be around but integrated into the house for regular internet use, phone calls, e-mail, etc. Will computer games explode before then, no. there arn't many new cpus coming out anytime soon and if you noticed the market slowed down, they're reaching the end of the span of just make everything smaller so we can fit more on one chip capability and now have to decide the next generation of computing. Computing power won't lead the games industry to explode...better, more creative game design might, though.

I suppose all of this is based on the premise that better computers = better games.Computing power won't lead the games industry to explode...better, more creative game design might, though.

I don't know if pc gaming will be a boom but I feel like it will never die. I feel like PC lan gaming that used to be prominent in college dorms has been replaced by XBox lan's. I have kind of lost interest in console gaming. I don't know if it's because I work on my PC and I just choose to use it for gaming, or I just prefer PC games, or i'm just getting old. Maybe that Madden is the only NFL game now is the reason. I used to get the new football game every year when it came out for consoles and Madden has disappointed me for years now. I prefer Console sports games like I prefer PC FPS's.

That's why I say there's going to finally be a merge between the two, console are much better for sports games (just because of the controller really) and computers are much better at fps mmorpgs rts because of the mouse and keyboard.

What will actually happen (if history is any indicator, and it is), is that the people who alredy have good PCs will get even better PCs. The people who haven't bothered to upgrade, will again not bother to upgrade. So, if anything, the gap will just keep getting bigger.
