Adding DIFs crashes engine

I noticed that if you add any DIFs, including the ones that come with TSE (reflecttest) or ones that were compiled and worked with MS3.5 that MS4 will immediately crash.
First thought was recompile them with the newly compiled map2dif_plus. This crashes the system, apparently the new map2dif_plus doesn't work.

Map2dif_plus and map2dif both crash when I try to run them. Map2dif says that it needs a 24 bit RGB or 32 bit RGBA texture, but I've tried cycling them to no avail, always fails. Map2dif_plus says it is a non powr of 2 texture, but I'm trying with a 1024x1024 texture so it is definately power of 2.
Do difs work for you in MS4?

Any dif I add crashes the system. I had converted all of Illumina's difs over to TSE a while back, and all of them crash in MS4. I also tried running the old starter.fps ones and the reflecttest.dif which came with terrain_water_demo with the same result. Map2dif_plus and map2dif both crash when I try to run them. Went to bed last night thinking I was going mad over this one!!!
would even crash putting "working" difs from a working folder into a different folder!
Thanks again.
