High Poly Mech

by Grim Moroe · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 08/04/2006 (8:25 am) · 10 replies

Here is a high poly mech I am working on that will be used to make normal maps. I am not sure about the wings yet. As always C&C are welcome.

Looks like a detailed Protoss with wings, very impressive.

I like the hard lines, but the curvey spikey things bother me. They speak of non-functional to me. Is this for a game/genre where technology is to the point that they can seemingly make anything? I can see that especially if they want to use looks to intimidate the enemy. The wings would slow you down when running. Do they fold up?

Are you going to apply a normal map to a lower poly model? How do you do that?

That's cool going to be fun to transfer the normals info to a low poly shape and look right better you then me hehe keep the updates comeing.

@Frank Maya7 has a surface sampler bult in you can make normals map, defuse map.
lit and shaded color,displament maps

Nice model overall. I like the design.

A comment on the topology side though is that the head, pelvis, guns, and the small tube like things in the wings dont seem to be as clean as the rest of the model. Even though its a higher poly model those would most likely be less dense. The rest of the model looks really nice and clean though.

Those are my only comments after staring at tons of modeler reels. :)

Thanks guys for the C&C.

Frank: "Is this for a game/genre where technology is to the point that they can seemingly make anything?"
Yes
"I can see that especially if they want to use looks to intimidate the enemy."
This was my goal with this model. :) The wings will fold up and detach. The way I will do the normal map is mentioned by Dave although I might do it in zbrush 2 since it is a little faster.

Dave: doing the transfer should be a breeze but will probably take a quite a few hours of calculation.

Juan: I'm not sure what you mean by the parts you mentioned not being clean like the rest of the model I only added dense geometry where it was needed for details. I am all ears though if you can show me where I went wrong I will be glad to fix it, by the way this model is only about 20% done so there is a lot left to do.

Nice really Nice

hehe what can you add to this that not already added, except a face :)
And how do you build a low poly model of that thing ?

I'm impressed, keep on posting !!

Really nice job! I agree with Stefan, it looks like some sort of a Protoss from Starcraft.

I really like your polygon usage in this model. It flows well.

I'd have to agree with Frank about the curves, mainly in the wings. Unless they're going to be made of some sort of super-fabric material. Then that'd make a little more sense. It might even look better if you just took out the wings and left it with the turbine thing on its back there.

Overall, an excellent job Grim!
