Please show me *ONE* impressive demo...

I am working on an online multiplayer game which is currently in pre-production. The team had suggested using Torque, for its robust network support, however I am still not completely sold. First off, the project is a MMORPG (please spare me the speech), so we need an engine that can support a large amount of simultaneous players. As far as I've seen, Torque is the best for that aspect in terms of indie 3d engines. The engine also has great support and a large community. This is all great, but when it comes to 3d engines, graphics are key. Of the demos I've seen, nothing out there really impressed me.

Don't get me wrong, I think its a great engine and would love to use it. It just seems somewhat dated. I need some evidence that the engine can support a modern game. If anyone has a real-time demo that truely displays what this engine has to offer, please post a link. Everything I see on the screenshot section looks like a Playstation1 game or a PC game from the 90's. I don't expect to get the Source engine for $100, but I would like to at least be able to produce something that has a chance at commercial success.

From what I have seen, the only demo worth mentioning is the Dojo demo done in TSE. My issue is that it seems that TSE is still beta and not yet ready to be used for a full-fledged game. So again, if anyone can show me just *ONE* demo that is impressive I will be sold. But as of right now, I can't really see using this engine for anything serious.

Many of the features you will need for an MMO also come in the MMOKIT we are working on for Torque. We have another major release coming in a few weeks, but feel free to check it out: www.mydreamrpg.com. The whole purpose behind it was to build up a featureset on top of Torque to support making an MMO. It will still require a significant time investment from you, but will get you to a launching pad quickly.

Hear hear, Dave! We are using TSE with the MMOKIT right now and I whole-heartedly believe we are further ahead for $250 than we would be anywhere else. Bottom line: you cannot beat what Torque gives you for that price.

Quote:Take the Reality Engine. Swallowed up by EPIC, and now the licensee's get a 50% discount on upgrading to the Unreal 3 engine if they want to keep developing with the Reality Engine. Greeeaaaatttttt, thought you had an engine licensed and now you get to come up with $250,000 for a 50% discount on Unreal 3. Wonderful.
That is completely wrong, They got acess to the Reality engine source code, and full support for the engine from Epic. Where did you get the "Pay Double to keep working" thing from?
They just had the option to upgrade to unreal 3 at any time half-price if they wanted to, never did they say they had to!

EPIC GAMES PURCHASES REALITY ENGINE

Quote:Developers who had purchased Reality Engine licenses prior to this sale will be offered upgrades to Unreal Engine 3 at significantly discounted prices

This is where I got my info. I haven't seen anything beyond this, so, I stand corrected that Reality Engine licensee's still have access to source and support from EPIC for the engine.

This was only an example of just another company that has been swallowed or sold to a larger company. It happens all the time. The point is, having a company like GG that has been around so long and isn't going anywhere since they are not for sale, is a worth while consideration when making a decision to license Torque.

Anton: Is there any problem naming the $20,000.00 engine you said you dropped for continue the work with TSE ???

(Randomly dropping in, skimming posts)

I agree, threads like this are rather.. dumb. If you want a game to look good, no matter what engine you use, it's all about how well you or your team is able to model, texture, and lay out a map design. Most modern engines (TGE, TSE, Reality, Unreal ) can render what you want out of the box. If not, it's easy to add in if you have experience programmers on your team. It all comes down to if you want a engine with great networking, great community, and great support, this is all you need. Any engine can look good with good art.

@Alienforce

Unigine v0.4. $20,000.00 for the source version. Still in development, so, not quite available yet. I have a pre-release version. We started with Unigine v0.3 a couple months ago. We loved it, but for reasons I mentioned above, we moved to TSE for the game. We are actually using our license for Unigine for a different game now. One that isn't releasing in 4 months. And that's one of the best things I can say about TSE, we can port the game over in a week or two and with the tools available, we actually took many steps forward in the game's development, rather than steps backward from switching engines.

@Andres

On the 19th I will post pictures of our Game ported to TSE. You'll be plenty impressed with the graphics. Believe me.

Biggest niggle I have with torque is lack of multitexturing features in the DTS format, and no support for multiple UV channels. Even in TSE. Last I looked even TSE only supports one UV channel, which limits what you can do for game visuals by a considerable ammount. To this day, it seems strange that DTS doesn't have support for this most basic, and in my opinion essential DX7 feature built in.
