This game, Feeders, was submitted for final testing approval to Try Media last night. When some people we had download the game at the link above from the TryMedia submission, tested the game, they found a freeze up at level up. I cannot personally recreate the bug on any of my computers. One of the people I work with was able to get the bug to happen one time. We honestly don't know if it's a bug on our end or a bug in TGB. I would really appreciate anyone who would be willing to download and try this game out and post any feedback about if the bug happens and what your system specs are.
Now, this is a private TGB thread, so, please keep this download private within those who have the TGB license. I am going to tell you something that I really hope you don't share freely. As of this version. You can copy/paste your TGB.exe into the folder and run the game freely without a time limit. Please, don't give this game to anyone in that condition. For obvious reasons. But i really need for people to play it both thru the TryMedia 'Feeders.exe' and your own TGB.exe because it may be a bug with the encrytion used by TryMark, the software that makes your TGB.exe a try and buy executable.
Also, for the record, since we included the .cs files in this test submission. If you happen to have a weird desire to look at the .cs files. I did NOT create this game. I have been spending the last week trying to rid it of bugs and game logic flaws. It was created by someone who got a higher paying job somewhere else and bailed on the project after lying A LOT about what TGB was able to do or not do so he could 'finish' and get paid for his work on this game. There's a lot of good and a lot of crappy code in this game. I personally don't want to be credited with some of the horrendous code in this game. :P
Thank you for your help. I am pretty desperate at this point to ask for you guys to take time from your own super busy schedules to look at this game for me. I really appreciate it alot. I trust that no one will distribute the game to friends or associates. It's free to play for you, but please don't ruin any potential sales by posting this on YouTube :P LOL Just kidding. :)

One thing that I noticed was interface confusion. I started the game after installing it and, after clicking the trial dialog, was presented with an infor page. It related the basics but I had to go to the menu to actually play. I liked having the info there to read (not that I did, so I will get to that in a moment), but it took me a second to figure out how to actually play the game. Not how to play as in instructions, but in how to play as in getting into the game and actually playing it. I played the basic game. No need to be fancy until I realized how much I sucked at the original, right?
I did not read the intructions closely. I read the basics and saw "Tetris with fish...cool". It was more complex than that, but that was the gist. Perhaps "Columns with fish-eating-stuff". I did not, however read the controls since I have played a million of these games.
The first thing that I noticed is that DOWN does next to nothingh. I expected it to drop what I was using. Rather, UP seemed to drop it...which made absolutely no sense to me. If I want something to go down, I drop it down. If I want it to go up in a dropping title, I'm ab out to die in a world of wishful thinking.
My second problem once I realized that dropping things with up worked was that fish seemed to drop randomly. I knew what was coming, but not where. This took ever instance of strategy out of the game for me. I could place reefs and such accordingly and try to break them down...but breaking them down became a random exercise in futility and success. There was no sense of "Yeah! I did that!" Rather, it was "Yay! A fish randomly landed there that ate my stuff. Thank God...I was about to suck even more horribly".
I love the artwork, and I like the concept. And maybe I just did things in a really stupid way. It would be par for my course. But those are what I saw. Since you included everything, I'll try to try it on my Mac this weekend (tech and dress rehearsals willing) to see if the .cs files translated.

LOL!!!
Thanks for the critique on the game. :) I was just looking for whether or not it froze on level up, but I appreciate the extra work to play the game and opinions. :)
You are like me, I went straight to playing the game and didn't read the instructions, and I was supposed to be working on fixing the game. :P
LEFT and RIGHT move the pieces left and right.
DOWN doubles the automatic drop speed.
UP drops the piece instantly. Just like in Tetris.
SPACE Rotates the pieces.
Place a FEEDER(one of the creatures) next to ALGAE(that colored stuff) of the same color so the FEEDER will eat the ALGAE. The rest is basicall TETRIS.
Oh, and the ROCKS that drop turn into ALGAE after 4 turns.

The lock up occured when I progressed from level 1 to level two. The level music plays and everything seems to be happening fine, however the block won't start moving down the level and it looks like the keys are disabled. The background animation keeps playing.
I'll try and run it again and see if I can make it do the same thing.

I tried it and got to level 3 with no lockups or anything bad. While playing I noticed I had somewhat the same problem as David Blake. The controls seem somewhat counterintuitive. Personally, I found myself hitting up to spin the piece, and space to drop it. Even after I figured out which keys did what, I still found myself fighting with them. The music is extremely repetitive and made me want to bash my head on my keyboard after several minutes of play. All-in-all however, barring the music (which was obviously not a major factor in the game ;) and my inability to become comfortable with the controls, the game seems very solid.edit: forgot to give my specs:

Thanks so much. This is very helpful. Especially the machine specs.

Thanks for the feedback on the controls. I really appreciate that. I'll pass that on. I also had trouble with the control layout at first.

I did not have any hangs, though, so I guess I can't help on that aspect.
07/02/2006 (9:08 am)
Now that you mention it, I don't think that I ever pushed up in Tetris. Because in a game where the point is to line up falling blocks, it makes little sense to push up. But the problem I had was that I never could place a feeder. They would drop randomly and quickly as if I were still pushing up and they got caught in the mix. So I found myself trying to build the algae around them to make them eat it rather than being able to place them accordingly.I did not have any hangs, though, so I guess I can't help on that aspect.

amd xp 3500+
radeon x850xt
a gig of ram.
I have the same complaint with the controls too, make it drop at down and rotate at up please!
The game seemed a bit "random" too (that's not really the word I'm looking for, but it's damn hot in here today so I can't think straight). To explain my point; the second level I completed entirely by simply pushing left, right and up at random. =)

Froze between level 2 and 3 for me, just like Glenn described. (everything, music, background animation, etc seems to be running along fine, but nothing happens).amd xp 3500+

I have a 2ghz pentium with about 512 mb ram.. running a crappy vid card but it works for TGB so cant complain..
maybe it is their ram that is killing them.. may be using all the free ram.. maybe they could try raising their virtual memory swap file..
but I will also try it up on my 1 ghz pentium with 768 mbs ram and a radeon 128 mb vid card.. Just to see what I get up there on that one..

Crashed after level 4 for no reason.. nothing in the console seems to show it should. During just a normal chaining...

This was using TGB.exe.
I've noticed that the seperating of the dropping groups starts getting rather slow after the board is filling up, and been playing a while.
WinXP SP2
HP DV1134 Laptop (1.6GHz centrino 736MB Ram)
Built in Intel graphics card.
Love it though! Very nice graphics - Compilments to the artists!
Music does get a bit annoying after a while though.
Must have a rumage through the code to see if I can learn anything (How to and how not to!)
I've been doing something visually similar with joining of blocks, but came at it from a very different angle.
Anton, thanks for the oppertunity to assist you with it. Really enjoyed your blog, though it seems to have been deleted...

Thanks for looking at the game. Feel free to knock yourself out with the code(that's not an official release of the code to you, since it's not my position to do so, but I can't exactly stop you now, and I wouldn't want to). But I have to warn you... lots of it is pretty rough. I mentioned above that the game wasn't completed and I had to do a lot of bug fixes and adding functionality in less than a week. There's nothing like having some other programmers code dumped in your lap with a deadline to fix it and add to it. But take what you can get out of it. But you'll probably want to do a lot of it better your own way. I'm sure you can.
