OS X 10.4.7 update causes major problems

by LGM · in ThinkTanks · 06/29/2006 (12:52 pm) · 11 replies

The guys over at planetthinktanks are not happy about the recent update to OS X.

When it is installed, ThinkTanks no longer works. It seems that the problem with OpenAL is worse.

Is there a plan in place to fix that problem? It first appeared with 10.4, but we were able to work around it.

Now it's just not good. The fix no longer works, and the mac users are getting a bit restless. The game just crashes when you try to run it. When is there going to be a solution to the OpenAL problem in Torque games?

Thanks,

Back in business now.

The only question is when is GG going to fix the issue with OpenAL?

You guys have any ideas on that?

Try this too. It was on the thread I linked from Planetthinktanks

Quote:Here's what I did to get my sound back.

Open the Terminal. Type the following commands:

Cd /System/Library/Frameworks/

And hit Return. This gets you into the correct location for the 2nd step, which is:

Sudo mv OpenAL.framework OpenAL.disabled

Hit Return and enter your admin password to make the change.

Voila! Fire up ThinkTanks and you'll have sound back! I'm not sure of what consequences there might be in renaming this folder, but it can always be renamed back if somehow it breaks something else. So far, everything seems to work fine for me, so I'm not too concerned.

I hope there is an easier fix going forward though, because this will be a PIA if every user who updates to Tiger needs to figure this out. I imagine there are quite a few users unaware of this site. I guess BraveTree is gonna be getting a lot of support emails.

That worked, but does installing OpenAL then disabling the OpenAL.framework directory have any adverse side-effects on other applications or the OS itself?

As far as what effect the "fix" has on the OS or other programs, I haven't seen any myself, but some people aren't comfortable with the fix. I have TT installed on a newer machine, and I'm not going to mess with 10.4.7 on that one until there is a real fix to the OpenAL issue.

My understanding is that this is an issue with other Torque games, too.

This issue has been fixed in ThinkTanks. If you re-download the intaller from www.garagegames.com/myAccount/ and re-install, it should work fine.

It's great to see that GarageGames has released a version that takes care of the problem.

Thanks for supporting the Mac community, and also for the Universal version.

Now I can be signed "a relieved fan".

How does one download from GarageGames in the My Account section when it doesn't even list that I've purchased ThinkTanks? Not very user friendly.

When I go to "My Account", I see a list of the products I've downloaded and purchased. (Have to log in, too)

It also shows me the ignition key code for ThinkTanks. Did you buy TT from GarageGames, or from somewhere else?

If you got it elsewhere, like Shockwave, you probably need to go there to get your newer version. I hope this helps, Shawn.
