Version 1.4 and Unicode

Greetings,
I have been working on my game since 1.2 and have upgraded at each release. There seems to be a problem with unicode on Windows 98 and ME on 1.4. Now, if it was just on the development machine it wouldn't be a problem; I'm using XP. However, any releases from Torque 1.4 cannot be run on Windows 98 and ME due to the lack of unicode support. I have a player who has worked really hard to figure out how to get my Torque 1.4 release to run on Windows 98 and I would like a solution.
Research:
1.4 crash
TGE Demo won't launch
Windows Me Crash
TorqueDemo.exe 1.4 illegal operation failure
New editor in 1.3?
Cannot run 1.4 on certain computers
I would like one of three solutions.
1. A way to support unicode on Windows 98 and ME in games that are created in 1.4 or
2. instructions on how to disable unicode in the engine so compiled games can be played on Windows 98 and ME or
3. the system requirements on Torque Game Engine be updated to show the correct requirements.
Thanks.
