Imagemaps for GUIs?

hi there,
i wonder if it is possible to have something like "imagemaps" in GUI-elements like on webpages (yes, i'm a webdeveloper ;) )?!?
or are GUI-elements limited to be "rectangular" or something?? does anybody see the need for imagemaps or is working on this already ???

The only issue would be that you couldn't have irregular shaped interaction areas.

You could have a menu gui with mouse event areas overlayed on the section you want to have interaction with.The only issue would be that you couldn't have irregular shaped interaction areas.

And it's probably exactly what you are looking for. I was gone for a couple of months playing DAoC so some of those older resources are hard to remember and I missed a few.
