Question about the Strategy PACK
by William Fox · in General Discussion · 04/17/2006 (4:26 pm) · 7 replies
The time is nearing to purchase the TGE instead of playing with my son's ITT copy
under the avail resource packs is a strategy starter pack
however I see it was constructed for an earlier version of TGE
after many months of attempting to modify the RPG model from the forums I am
curious how does one gather all the docs necessary to upgrade the purchased
starter pack for a Strategy client to the current version?
I prefer to get some sorta info before buying something I may not need or use.

The RTS pack is pretty easy to port over to 1.4 (there are forum posts about it in RTS private forums) so I wouldn't worry to much about that.

I did an environment pack for the RTS kit. Take a look at the move you can download here. You said the terrain was "weak", but I think thats a little unfair to the engine in this case.
The movie link is about half way down the page www.garagegames.com/products/82
The environment in Torque is a height displacement type of terrain, which has it inherent pluses and minuses. But if you learn the tool and plan your environment, you can make very nice RTS environments with the tools Garage Games has provided.
Also, there are resources available in the community to allow the support of greater numbers of textures on the map than the default 6.

I agreed that having only one detail texture is a bit limiting, but if you are making an RTS, then the camera is going to be far enough from the map that you wont see the detail texture in most cases anyway.
Also, take a look at a couple of the screen shots on this page.
www.shapesandlines.com/RTSContentPackDevelopment.htm
Specifically the desert shots. I made special effort to demonstrate that with a little effort, you can get nicely textured and contoured cliffs using only the map terrain.
If you want more detailed cliffs, modeling them and adding them is definitely the route to take.

that would be nice to not have to develop from scratch. the game will be seen from an RPG point of view
and yes terrain at that view is limited. I am certain that despite the limits I will produce what I want.

The game we are designing is not a strategy game , i just need the strategy pack for certain portionsthat would be nice to not have to develop from scratch. the game will be seen from an RPG point of view

and purchasing the RTS pack
then downloading and installing
Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition
and the Microsoft Platform SDK
and following numerous so called just do this posts
I have found that I wasted 150$ and a days pay
trying to see a demo of the RTS
documentation is outdated
directory paths are incorrect or vague where 2 or more paths could be correct
no structured step 1 step 2 sorta documentation
sorting thru numerous threads trying to find the problem etc to cure
in summary dont believe it when some one says yeah your answer is right here
until you go there and see it fail

Topic: RTS/ TGE ver 1.4 build solution
Three weeks from purchase I built a true
solution to RTS under VS2005
this solution is coming to the community as
RTS_Starter_kit-1-4_Beta1
Found the best overall solution was examine
each forum post and ended up creating my own
with a major assist from GG employee Matt Fairfax
who provided the fix for last remaining issue with my build solution.
right now the forum has a detailed build chain of posts under 1 thread
simple and not too long and I do host the edits as .zips
3 contain files for the solution build one is a custom build icon set
already have tested myself and posts are present saying Success and thanks
today i recieved an email requesting the creation of project file package (.zip)
for release as a beta with testing period leading up to release as RTS for TGE 1.4
on April 22nd I purchased TGE and the RTS
had not used a compiler since win 3.1 and that was
a floppy install (alot of floppies) of Win C++ dev kit from microsoft
I also used a Borland C++ compiler for awhile
in 3 weeks with Great support from the RTS private community
and several GG employees I climbed the learning curve and produced
my own version of RTS for TGE 1.4
now available so future users looking to aquire the RTS
will not have to spend thier first 3 weeks making thier resources compatible
with each other.
I realize that not everyone has the RTS so I have posted here
General Forum thread
you can see a few shots and read a tad about what RTS is going offer
now that a standard 1.4 model is avail.
