Trying to bring a huge file to another computer

by Mark · in General Discussion · 04/16/2006 (4:50 pm) · 13 replies

It can't be saved on any disk or something.

Is there a way I can transfer a file from my computer to a laptop? Can I use an Ethernet cable?

Sure would :)
do you have a service running on one or the other end?

you will need one of them to host a server.

how about windows networking?

Well .. to use FTP you must have a service open on one end.
something for the client to connect to right?

you should not have to use ftp you can use windows networking no?

Hmm...
so you do not know how to use windows networking?
its fairly simple.

setting up an ftp service is probably more complex.

I cannot think of a better means to transfer the file, assuming both machine are in windows.
then windows is the best way to transfer the file.
using windows file and printer sharing.
are they both xp?

Ok.

do you use accounts to login with passwords?
are they on a domain?

you should be able to login remotely with that same account.

try that.

to get to the machine, do you know the ip address?
if you do:
click start -> run type:
\\192.168.0.5 (if that is the right ip)
if not you can use the machine name, or you can browse with your explorer thru "My Network Places"

once you can hit that machine and get into it, you need only to share a folder and copy your file to it.

Simple solution free service on internet is XDRIVE its a remote attachable storage space
send it there and go get it with other computer

if you have an ISP with a hompage service you can send the file there
via http upload and retrieve it from a web addy in IE
be aware that it wont be secure in that method

lastly JUMP DRIVE is a very good option

If both computers are in the same hood (or easily approachable) you're done simply by setting up a peer2peer network connection using a crossover cable.
Obviously to get this done you should set up theyr IP and workgroup to be:
IP: one sequential to the other (eg: pc-1 1.1.1.1 and pc-2 1.1.1.2)
same netmask, no DNSes nor gateways.
Workgroup: exactly the same (case sensitive I suppose).

Bye, Berserk.
