Free Lightwave Tutorial and Starter Character

by Andy Hawkins · in Artist Corner · 03/21/2006 (8:35 am) · 16 replies

I've uploaded a PDF and a bunch of files which show you how to rigg a character in Lightwave and export to work in Torque. This goes some of the way to support Lightwave users in place of the Kork model which is not available in Lightwave format.

It also illustrates a pipeline for working from Lightwave to Torque for artists (and soon programmers / scripters).

I hope this helps people out. Let me know if you want the zip in a different format for Linux and Mac users. I suspect that PDF is cross-platform.

Please give feedback, anyone who has a go at this tut. I will modify it as required. Later I'll add the following animations.

Run
Side
Back
Jump

... I think I better stop at that because maybe I'm giving too much away for free???? Comments? I guess everyone will say "nahhh... c'mon give us more" but taking a look at the Jill pack (admittedly my art isn't quite there) that pack has a few more anims, full texture and some weaponry for $40.

The other thought I had was spruce it up a bit, complete the anims and script and maybe, just maybe, GG will include it in the next point release for TGE / TSE... that would be cool.

I don't know - just dreaming I guess :)

@CDK - no problem. I don't know why more Lightwave users don't grab this. It basically represents most of the technology involved in the skeleton pack - but for free!!!!

PS. I'll update this thread when I can make it totally compatible with the Motion Kit and Ragdoll packs.

Great Tut have not messed with it but have looked it over and looks simple enough that anyone like me can use it. Looking forward to more if possible at a later date.

Thanks - it's not exactly simple - but should help you overcome all the technicalities. What more would you like?

Thank you for providing this great tut. I will check this in the next few weeks.

I hope everything still works that way since it is 2 years old now.

Yes it still works - I'm using that character in BRAVE at the moment. Here's some more tutorials...

I've added some non-specific tutorials for Lightwave users on weight mapping which you can grab here.

There's whole pile of tuts here, so grab these to add to your existing Skeleton Pack videos.

I recommend using XVid codec and Media Player Classic to watch - sound is noisy so you may need head phones.

Unwrapping
Shows how to unwrap using endomorphs - better control over unwrap process.
Unwrapping. 90 meg ~21mins

Skelegon creation, weight mapping, bones, animation and export to Torque
Shows how to add skelegons, weight map, then rigg and animate quickly for Torque.
Skelegons Pt 1. 13 meg ~3.5 mins
Skelegons Pt 2. 33 meg ~9 mins
Skelegons Pt 3. 27 meg ~7 mins
