Atlas heightfields/textures

Hi,
I've been playing with HTC for a couple of days and it can merge multiple heightfields and blend textures, and make one big Atlas terrain from them. Is this a feature of Atlas? I can't find any docs that show how to do this using Atlas commands.
Actually, thinking about it, it must be a property of raw files if anything, as that is what the chu file is generated from. Would that be correct, or is Vincent doing clever stuff himself?
Thinking about it yet again, I suppose the heightfields are saved as a large combined jpg or other graphic and then converted to raw. That seems more likely. Sorry for using you all as "cardboard programmers" to talk out the solution myself!
Thanks very much,
Dave.
