Paid Modeling Position open minimum pay $1000 USD

by Dreamer · in Jobs · 11/09/2005 (7:43 am) · 22 replies

I'm looking for a modeler.
Contract is for a minimum of 10 fantasy style, low poly, player models suitable for use with RTS kit.
All models must have a uniform style, any style is fine as long as all the models feel like they belong together.
Models must be responsive to all standard animations and properly skinned or uv mapped, as well as scaled etc.
Pay is $100 per model plus $25 per skin for additional skins beyond the first.
There are a minimum of 10 models needed each with a minimum of one skin, more considered, if good quality.
All models must be originals, i.e. if one is a mage, no other model can be a mage etc, and no two models can share a common mesh, in other words I do not want a white knight and a black knight etc, unless one is just a secondary skin.
All models MUST be your own original work.
This is an all or nothing proposition, don't bother to respond until you have at least 10 completed models, meeting my requirements.
There is no concept art on this project, so you are free to use your imagination.
This is standard contract work for hire, if I buy your models, you release all rights to these models including future resale, these rights are to be permanently consigned.
All models must include their source files, extra consideration given for models created using blender and skins made in gimp (must include .blend and .xcf files)
Email smorrey@gmail.com with further questions, when ready to submit. Do not directly email models to this address without contacting me first.
Furthermore do not contact me regarding this unless you are serious and have work ready to sell immediately.

This will remain open until filled.

Heh, I'll be surprised if anyone makes your 10 models up front. Your probably better off paying per model and hoping someone is willing to pretty much give them away.

Oh well, thats their loss. If they are hungry and want work, I'm willing to pay. $100 USD is not exactly what I'ld call giving a model away. Asking for 10 to be made up front gives me a chance to make sure they can do consistant work.
I've been burned by to many modelers who either
a) sold me stuff that wasn't thiers
b) couldn't consistantly produce quality work.
I think this is a fair trade, if you disagree, well thats not my problem.

That would be very foolish. In 3 weeks.... "Hey Dreamer, I finished your models!!!"

.... "Oh, sorry man, someone already submitted a set. guess your SOL"

@Chris, you know for a fact I don't work that way. However like I said before this does give a good chance for me to see if you can produce a consistant set. Which of course could lead to more work.

Not to mention that $100 USD for model meeting all your requirements is chump change. On average models involving the amount of work you're talking about go for $500 to $750 per depending on who you're talking to . I just recently beat out a competitor who's bid was $1000 for each of his models. If you're serious about completing your project and you want good quality you need to up your offer.

Dreamer - I know you don't.

Why don't you just contract it out, and pay after the models have been delivered? If they aren't up to snuff don't pay for them. That's how most people do it. What do you have to lose by that?

(as a note... I think that price is ok for someone who knows they will get a large chunk of work, just dont expect to get the best of the best.)

@Chris, It's low poly RTS models, believe me I'm not expecting much for $100, just that they function as per specs.
I'm posting here because I know we have a large group of just learning modelers, I honestly don't expect much better than programmer art. ;)

@NR, not going to happen.

That just cracked me up. Hey it's getting close to Christmas. I could use a grand :)

Obviously you want some kind of quality.

@Michael, yes the operative word in my statement was MUCH, as in I do want better than programmer art, but I don't want nor need super polished professional grade art work. This is an excellent opportunity for a buddng modeler to make some cash and get some credits under their belt.

Eh, not sure how that happened, seems that refresh submitted my post again. Anyway, For RTS I guess $100 isn't too bad. But I do think per model is probably going to be better. You can always add a pic of each model completed so people know what style and quality your looking for.

$100 each isn't much for professional quiality original work, but not bad for someone doing it for the experience ;) which is worth something in itself, assuming the product ships.

@ Dreamer I agree with you. It would be a great opportunity for somebody who has skills but not necessarily a reputation. If they do a good job they will get exposure and more jobs and can demand higher pay. It is the same for coders. If you put up a resource here that people think is awesome, you will get job offers.

@Michael, exactly and the product will ship, since actually the art is intended as a community resource, I intend to package it with a demo game I'm writing (nearly complete) that will be given to the community like all my other resources. If the art is good enough, there may even be other arrangements available later on down the road.

@Dreamer: drop me an email (in my profile)--I know a very skilled Torque artist that did something very similar for my project. I'll be honest, you'll most probably need to change around your contracting negotiation with him, but I'll leave that to you!

@Everyone, thanks for the input. It seems judging from my email inbox there are several starving artists out there, some of the quality has pretty much blown my mind.
Here are a couple of excellent examples of the work these guys can do.
Troll
A Balrog
Those were both by an great artist named Ori.
For now lets call this position filled, I will be looking for other artists in a few weeks though, so stay tuned...

No offense but your offer is pretty stupid. Very one sided. I either do contracts for 25% or 50% up front, depending on the job.

@Matt none taken, you most likely have the skills and hence the work record, that this offer did not suit your needs, which is of course fine. I did however find that quite a few reasonably well skilled artists are out there, for whom this is at least an acceptable offer. One was able to provide sufficient evidence of his skills, while agreeing to the terms that I have laid out, without too much modification. He has been hired for this contract, and should he fullfill the contractual obligations, he will be extended work offers for the foreseeable future.
It's a good arrangement ;)
