Community Project

So I was wanting to start up a community game made with TSE, hopefully to get ported to the Xbox Arcade. The community for this project should be large, almost like a opensource project for TSE owners. I'm not a TSE owner yet, but when my mail in order gets to GG I will be. So what do you people think?
NOTE: TSE Owners or soon to be owners only need reply, employees welcome too ;) .
NOTE: I already have 3 people in the community.

Who would get the money?

So you want to make a community project... then port it to xbox to sell?Who would get the money?

GG staff, or maybe nobody. Does not need to be sold for money, it would go through the free xbox live arcade service.

Yeah. Unless it was given out as freeware and everyone had a contract saying that they were voulenteering, you could get sued pretty badly.

This is not a paid position, this is an attempt to create an awesome game for GarageGames and community. This is to form a community game, where everyone can have input. If I need to have people sign not for profit papers, then that is what I will do. Oh and off topic question, is there a limit to how many meshes TSE can load? Friend of mine said he could only load around 1500 meshes, TGE does not have that problem. I hope when I get my TSE license I dont have that problem. Can someone confirm this?

Isn't GG starting another community project again soon?
10/23/2005 (2:12 pm)
I think porting the game to xbox would cost money.. so I doubt giving it away on XLA will be possible.Isn't GG starting another community project again soon?

Robert, this sounds more like a "Please help make my game for me for free" kind of thing. Anyone that donates a single thing to your project would need a contract to say they're doing this for free. Sorry if what I said offends you but community projects usually don't work very well in the long run.

It is very hard to create something to sell with community work, same things goes, who gets the money when it does sell? I am sure you can put togeather a community team worthy of finishing such a project, but royalties will be your problem.

Communitys can raise money, anything is possible. Although thanks for the concerns.
Anthony
What royalties? No one makes money. Again thanks for the concerns.
To everyone else not thinking before posting(you know who you are).

Robert, I read all the posts. I've made educated replies. You just refuse to accept them.

1. After the license fee is taken care of, the game is set to free, only problem with that is the consumers who purchased the version for money will be a little steemed.
2. Somebody donates money to the cause of purchasing the license to release on xbox.
Now, I can be wrong about license costs for release games on xb360 live arcade, I am sure a gg staff member can input better than I on the subject. Don't take my posts as negativity towards the project. I will support it 100%, I think projects like these are great, with all the talent in this community, I am positive something amazing can be produced. I am very interested in what kind of game it will be, will the person who came up with the idea be posting soon?

You have to pay to release something on xbox, bottom line, no matter if your an indie or not. You did state that you want the project to release for xb arcade, that is awsome, except it costs money. In order to make that money back, you have to sell the game in order to pay back the license cost. But once the license cost is paid for, who will get these royalties? There are only two cases I can think of where there would be no royalty issue.1. After the license fee is taken care of, the game is set to free, only problem with that is the consumers who purchased the version for money will be a little steemed.

community projects will not work
1) the source can never be open source, that would break the eula
2) to manage people who are not getting paid is close to impossible
3) Xbox SDK cost money, where is this money to come from if you arn't selling the game.
Don't waste time hoping others will help you on a project without paying them. Start small make some casual games. Generate revenue, use money to fund the game you dream about.

Robert, I'm sorry if I come across rude, but I clearly state the truth. Money clearly is, and always is an issue as you can tell. Licensing fees for one thing. And contracts. Bottom line is that in the end no one really has time or is willing to dedicate the time needed to complete a community project without getting paid. From what it sounds like there isn't even an idea for the community project. No genre is even worked out.

in the cobweb of my mind.
1. GG markets the game. Money goes back into the company.
2. Community project members contribute just for the learning experiance and to get
there names out in the credits. Help build portfolio. We sign release of any $$$ to GG for
project.
3. GG then provides framework (TDN for proj members) and private forum. As well as
approving content (that's acceptable etc) and maybe a little help on the side.
Why do it this way? Well the way I see it any investment in GG that helps them make
profit helps us all. Why? Because the more income the better tools GG will provide for
us to make games in the future.
It's win win situation (scene from Pauly Shore in the Army now). :)

There might be a way... a pseudo community project. This is a concept that's been lurkingin the cobweb of my mind.

You missed the whole point of this thread. The source will be open source to the community, dosent need to be the whole world. The money will come from my pocket, read last post. Dont need to manage peobe, they contribute what they want. Oh and My favorite game is Futurelands the game I'm designing, I have money to fund my game.

You are wrong, there are so many people willing to work for free. Have you heard of open source?
The only problem is that I'm targeting a smaller community, I'm sure people would be willing help out.
Also if you look at the resources section, you can see the community helping develop the TGE. The same thing can be done to an Official GarageGames Community game.
I like Randys idea.
Matter of fact, has anyone looked at TV3D? I think TV3D allowed code contributers a free license. Some people are kids who cant afford TGE or TSE, they would help develop the game for a license.
