Winning in Quick Play mode without losing a single tank

ThinkTanks is one of the most entertaining games I've ever played. Lately I've taken to playing Quick Play and trying to win without losing a tank. Guess what? I've been successful several times. The lush modes are probably the easiest. The key is to alternate between being very aggressive and making yourself scarce, usually by hiding on the side of the cliff. If you're smoking a lot it's best to wait for a health pack to show up and then make a beeline for it. When you're hiding on the side of a cliff, the other tanks frequently come after you, but mostly they careen off the side of the cliff. You can take pot shots at them, and sometimes even get credit for the kill. This is a very entertaining way to play the game. I was wondering if anyone else has discovered this mode of play.

You guys seem to be very knowledgable about think tanks. i just bought it yesterday. i can't seem to keep my brain for more than a minute. other players seem way more in control of their tanks, ie, their tanks move on a dime, mine slides around, they can move back and forth very quickly, move in on a target and leave before i am able to retaliate. so, i was wondering...are they using a joystick or some other device? i only have my keyboard and mouse. thanks

I only use a keyboard and a mouse. Move around constantly. The small tank is best because it's fastest. Don't be a sitting duck. Look for opportunities, such as two tanks fighting it out amongst one another. They'll wound each other and then you can move in and kill one or both while they're preoccupied with one another. Only go after HumBot if he's seriously wounded. Hang on the side of the cliff as mentioned above and take potshots when they go off the cliff after you. Have fun.

Thank you for the feedback. i was beginning to think there was something wrong with me. i have watched players do what you suggest. but the way they move in, fire, backup, and then leave quickly is something that has eluded me. and they seem to be able to fire more than me. i press my mouse rapid fire but cannons (or whatever they are) don't come out every time. the pros probably hate me cause i'm no challenge for them. i'll keep trying cause i like this game....about the health pack....do they show up randomly? does it show on the radar when a health pack is available? and if not how does one know they are around? and where to go to use it?

The health pack shows up on your radar as blinking red it appears randomly with all the other powerups.

Hi, I was referring to play against the bots. I agree with you that when playing online, the other players seem to be able to move faster and fire faster etc. I always get killed against these apparently superhuman players. Do they cheat? I don't know how they do it.The health pack shows up on your radar as blinking red it appears randomly with all the other powerups.

One thing to remember about shooting is your gun has to reload. The light tanks have 7 shots per clip then it takes a couple of seconds to load another clip. The medium tanks have 5 shots per clip and the heavies have 3 shots.
Have fun playing TT. If you have more questions about playing TT, you'll get a better response over at www.planetthinktanks.com.

There are no cheat codes for TT. A lot of the online players have been playing the game for a while. The more you play, the better you can become in battlemode or scrum. Your network connection speed can affect the speed of your game. TT is hard to play when using a dial-up connection. DSL or cable modem is a better choice. The location of the game server can be a factor as well. If you are on the east coast of the U.S. and the server is on the west coast, you'll notice "lag". Your shots won't come out as fast, people seem to move faster than you, etc. Lag is one of those things you have to get used to if you play online a lot.One thing to remember about shooting is your gun has to reload. i have cable connection so it's fast.
how do i know where the game server is located?
also, is there any particular place on the tank that is better to aim at?
this is the first time i have ever played a game like this...interactive, so i am really green.
but any info is good cause i was getting frustrated.
one last question...do all players play with keyboard and mouse or is there a joystick that will work to make my tank more controllable/responsive?
thannks...

Some of the custom servers (hosted by players) have the state initials in the server name (IA, MI, etc). For the rest of them, you need to check the ping rating. Select a server then check the server info (bottom right). It will tell you the map name, server OS, and ping rate. The lower the ping rate, the better your connection. Anytime it is under 100 is pretty good. The number of players on a server and their locations can affect the server's response. The ping rate you see when you select a server will change once you join and as others join the server.
There is not any one spot on a tank that is more vulnerable. If the tank is moving, try to lead it a little. The shots do have an arc since the programmers made it somewhat realistic. You have to be aware of the terrain, which way you are moving, and which way the target is moving. I still get impatient and start shooting before I have the reticule (bulls-eye) lined up on the target. Probably one of the reasons I play scrum more than battlemode. I tend to fill the air with lead and hope they run into my shots. :)
Almost everyone uses a keyboard and mouse (including me). Joysticks do not work with TT. Some game pads do work for steering, replacing the arrow keys or A,S,D,W keys. A few players use a track ball instead of a mouse and they swear the track balls are more accurate because they reduce gun movement. However, it takes time to adjust to using the track ball.
The light tanks are the fastest but are slower to turn. The heavy tanks are slowest but turn faster. The mediums are in between. Lights are almost always used for scrum. For battlemode (BM), it depends on the user's preference. Some BM'ers like the power of the heavies but most prefer the speed of the lights.

there is a place to aim on the tank to keep you rounds from
hitting the ground and that is the brian jar.
also there are colored dots near the servers indicating the
ping response time.
i think, Green = 0-100, Yellow= 100-200, Red = 200-500..
and try this out if you haven't already figure it out, when
you are comming onto little bumps on the terrain turn your
tank side to side to gain momentum, if you hit it just right
you will fill as if your tank is flying, but sometime is hard to
control when in this state, i use it mainly to get away from
other tankers.

Vash...thanks for the tips. this is beginning to make a little more sense. i'm still having a problem. there are times when i will rush up on a tank firing away, being fired at, and i'm always the one to die. how many shots does it take to die? i usually use light tank but it still happens when i use the other two tanks.sass

The medium has more, but the heavy tank has the most armor. There's a trade off between the tank types.
If you go head to head, whoever loses their armor first loses.
Vash's sliding tip can be very useful too.

timing is off by a hair, also it could mean that not all
your rounds were on target.
this just takes time and practice becuz certain tanks
have a certain amount of rounds per brust as MJ points
out. the heavy has the least amount becuz of its
damage to round ratio.
when you get your practice in you will know more or less
when to lay off the fire button (which is like a reload) and
shoot again before the other tank does this. and thats
were the timing come into play. (i usually wait until i unload 3/4 of my first clip then reload and empty out my second clip, against a light tank this maneuver will kill him if all rounds hit there target.)
now if they just have a better fire rate there is not much u
can do about it up close, in this case u may might want to
change your tactic and take them out from long distance.
(that too has its challenges)
to keep your rounds on target is a bit tricky. you have to
mess with the options area of the game and adjust your
settings to your liking. it will take a few tries to get it were
u like but your accuracy will improve.
and thats about it.
cya out on the field.
