The internet may split?

I just got done reading a article last week about how countries in europe want control of the internet ICANN system or shared control. Today I read a article that some countries in eurpoe said they may need to split the internet if the US does not give in allowing other countries to support the backbone.

I thought this was big enough news to share as it is something that would affect the community since we have quite a few users in europe.

Also, it may be impossible because they would have to disconnect the phones too (Dial-up anyone?) so they would pretty much break most communication, I don't think it's a good idea for anyone.
EDIT: Uh-oh... goodbye runescape. {:(

They wouldn't be able to do that, USA controls around... maybe 60%-70% of the internet? And many people buy things from the USA via internet. Now their economies will get a rumble if they try. Also, it may be impossible because they would have to disconnect the phones too (Dial-up anyone?) so they would pretty much break most communication, I don't think it's a good idea for anyone.

Wow holy necro post, This post was about the IANA and ICANN where it was the other country's that wanted to split from the us as a threat if they didn't get some controlling interest. They are now international commities which was in the best interest of everyone.

I think this is very controversal; however anyone who knows anything would agree or disagree to this but must see the whole point of. Anyone know Mitchio Kaku? Well the internet being National and no longer USA Owned would be a large step towards a Type I civilization. Now if only internet was free.... >.<
