Constructor source code?

by Josh Albrecht · in Torque Game Engine · 09/29/2005 (6:55 am) · 11 replies

Will there be any possibility of getting the source for constructor when it is released? I think it makes sense to release a version that includes source code (you can even raise the price, I'd still buy the source version) for the following reasons:
1. Having the source lets you expand the functionality in ways that scripting simply cannot.
2. Having the source lets you UNDERSTAND what is going on. This is my single largest compaint about the Torque Show Tool Pro. I have no idea what it is doing under the hood, so it sometimes doesnt help at all because I dont know if the problem with the model, with Torque, or with the Show Tool Pro.
3. It cant be THAT much extra effort to release a source version. It will be some, agreed, but it cant be hard enough to counter the usefulness of these other points, can it?
4. GG said it might release Torque2D as a "no-source" product, and there was backlash, and they didnt, and now we have lots of resources that can extend the functionality of the engine, and many bugs were caught because so many people could see why the engine was crashing. I would guess that the same (improved reliability and functionality) would probably be the case with Constructor. :)

That's just my opinion. Let me know if I'm a crazy person, or if GG already plans on doing this, or if you think I have some valid points.

Thanks!

AFAIK you don't get full source code... but I think you do get enough to make your own plugins and things. (I might be wrong)

Look for Mattew Fairfaxs .plan which says about it.

Edit: I think it's www.garagegames.com/blogs/985/8341

Unofficially, someday I would like to have a source license for Constructor (it *would* be significantly more expensive since it would basically be a full Torque SDK plus a lot of extra functionality). However, it can take quite a while to prep a codebase for public consumption.

Officially, no decision has been made. We need to finish the product before we can seriously consider the licensing.

I, personally, would buy both versions, or upgrade to the Source version if at all possible.

I agree. Having a version of Constructor with an Indie source license would be great. I am not sure exactly how you guys could work out a good license / price point for it, but I know I would get it, if it was reasonably priced.

I, too, would willingly pay extra for a source version or purchase a later upgrade for a version with the source.

Same as above :)

I want the source code because there isn't a Linux version of constructor available and there are no plans to make one and I'd like to port it myself.

I'd buy the source, definately.

So has GG considered releasing the source public or open source even? Would love to get it to tweak my own version of the editor for demo apps or whatnot, Would be cool if thats coming but I seriously doubt it. If anyone hears anything hit me up here. Thanks!

An extensive code review would need to be done to make sure that there is not any proprietary code before releasing it. The lighting code would be the key area of concern.
