Torque Game Movie Project - Any ideas?

by Linhart Walter · in General Discussion · 09/14/2005 (11:32 pm) · 17 replies

I propose to make a video available online to show off what is being done with this engine. Heres how I envision it so far.... every game submitted would get to put in image background with information such as company, release date, platform that lasts say... 5 seconds, then it shows 10-15 seconds of gameplay and moves on to the next. The videos could be available singly or as a whole segment.

I can do the video editing and compression, the problem is getting all the video. The best bet is for everyone to use the Fraps Demo or a similar program, sending the data directly using mirc or messenger would work but the video's are rather large (130 megs for 30 seconds) so I don't know.

I volunteer to host the video's (I can only host up to an extent of about 50 megs) at my website and a link could be provided by GG.

Anyone have any ideas/comments/thoughts?

I think that the idea is great. I really like the way EBGames TV works with hosts and interviews with developers and fans mixed with footage. It plays like Entertainment Tonight for games. I think something like this would be fantastic for the Garage Games community. As long as the developers and fans promise to wear their sunday best for the interviews. It would have a negative effect otherwise. Nothing like promotional media to gain respect from the industry media and ignite interest and excitement among future customers.

Take the videos from Illumina. I get more and more interested in that game everytime I see another video. One thing I think in particular is that I want to see it, because I am curious to see what else they are going to do with the game, since as an indie game, I didn't expect the level of coolness that the game has been showing. I even worked on it myself for a couple months and I'm still dropping my jaw at both the coolness and in suprise that it's so cool. They are just blowing me away and they are just in game footage shots. Ian is really smart to show those in my opinion because they are generating buzz and with each video the momemtum of the buzz is building.

For instance... for the TSE... I would make an egyptian themed teaser trailer to show off the new engine capabilities. Something like the style of the Mummy movies. Something like this:

GG logo on a white background
GG logo blends into the blazing midday sun and the background into a clear intensly blue sky
Camera pulls back to reveal a desert
Camera pulls back behind something that creates a sillouette in the sun... it's an egyptian
Camera pulls back more to show that the egyptian is standing near the top of a pyramid
Camera pulls back to show more of the pyramid... both still sillouetted in the sun
You can see many more egyptians on and around the pyramid working building the pyramid
Camera swings around the pyramid so you can see everything clearly
Camera moves back and to the side and you see the Sphynx
Camera moves down among a line of workers heading to the pyramid and begins to follow along the line
Lots of special particle effects for sand kicking up as they walk in line
Camera continues along the line and moves down toward the feet of the workers in line
Camera passes through some reeds and comes out of the reeds to reveal...
The Nile in all it's beauty
Camera moves along the nile and show people and maybe underneath to show underwater creatures
Camera moves away from the nile to show a city and begins to follow a chariot riding toward the entrance
The chariot has a rich person with jewels and gold and other cool stuff
The chariot rides into the gates and the camera is right behind and...
Boom. TSE Coming soon. All in some cool egyptian themed background in gold letters all shining and stuff.

or

for the bad ass version... instead of just following the chariot a sandstorm hits out of nowhere and everyone starts toward the city
the camera follows people heading toward the city and in particular the chariot and the chariot is followed into the city gates where it barely escapes being overtaken by the sand and then...

Boom. TSE Coming soon. All in some cool egyptian themed background in gold letters all shining and stuff with sand blowing across from the sand storm.

That's just off the top of my head right now. But with some work cool trailers can get people in awe of something coming soon. Works for movies. It worked for Doom 3. It can work for us.

That would require a bit more work than I suggest, they don't have to go about making custom 'movie' level, they just have to show off what they have at the moment

Oh... I am just saying what I think is cool. I mentioned a TSE trailor because there have been cool TSE trailers already.

Hmm... I was hoping for more than one person posting... nobody seemes to be very enthused about such a project...

Its a lot of off project work, that really doesn't have any direct tie in with the day to day grind. I suspect not to many people will want to spend a bunch of time on it... Just my feeelings.

The amount of time required for them to do this isn't too bad, it could take about 10 minutes to get fraps, install it, run it, run thier game, record 30 seconds of it, send it off with a little information...

they don't have to spend a whole lot of time on it....

I think part of the problem with the idea is that it is for mature products. Gamers aren't going to get very excited about seeing prototypes and programmer art. You should play with the different settings on whatever codecs you're using, though, if they'still that large for 30 seconds.

Problem is fraps doesn't do any encoding when it records (real time video and sound encoding is hard on a machine, compressing it too would just be insane)

Yah, I would like to only see projects that are well under way on this, games like Illumina and Minions of Mirth are a good example. 130 megs could be sent to me via IRC, I can compress after editing using a divx codec or so to knock each video to maybe a meg or two.

I wouldn't really require it for each person to record their own stuff, then compress as well, unles there was a super easy method (I'm trying to keep the "work" each group would do to a minimum)

I would love to do it once we get to that point ( not even close at the moment ).

possible solutions: send CDs via mail.

I Think thee idea is amazing, i think we should show off the variety of enviroments you can build on it. For example an egyptian city goes through redds to show river and the water effects then through a rock or something to show the jungle so on...... thats just off the top of my head though

I found a free program called game cam (it doesn't use a watermark like fraps), it will encode the video as it records it, it's a little harder to set up, but I had a 22 second video that only took up 1.7 megs

EDIT- mostly free, it won't record sound, it records video beautifully however....

I think that you have a really good idea, the only problem I can see happening is the lack of sufficiently completed projects to make it more than just a minute or two long. I look forward to seeing where this goes! Good Luck!

The projects don't have to be complete, just good enough to show off what the games have

Count the Illumina team as interested, Though we wont do it for a few more weeks until the "OMG" features are ingame.

But we would be keen if you get enough interest from other projects.

Making a video in TGE would be fun..You could just use .rec files and play them. Sounds like a good idea :)

Correct, I realize that, my argument was that there aren't going to be enough that are completed sufficiently to be able to show off anything. But that was just IMO
