I purchased 3DWS last night and havent received anything yet. I am an anxious newb with hopes that this program will be easier than Quark.

I just got my reg key but josh how can i export out to diff? and how can i open up a .map that was created with quark?

Dammit why do I have to be so poor? I'll take a look into it as soon as I can afford it. After being spoiled by the Unreal editor, I really don't have the patience to learn everything about Quark.

Well 3d world studio still cant export out to .dif correctly its still a wip really while the toolset is nice unless you can use it in torque easily i dont see the point.

3DWS exports fine, as you can see here.
But it still has some issues to be taken care of, since it is an early adaptor version.
But to me, it is *the* number one tool right now that lets you create models/interiors from all-convex primitives sporting all-convex models. The picture above is a column with a boolean-subtraction of an upside down staircase, an operation resulting in the model you see above. I was very pleasantly surprised that it worked.
Btw, writing a .map importer should be pretty straight forward, so I am confident that he (or someone) will implement this.

No, this is not true.3DWS exports fine, as you can see here.

With this, you will be able to export a .map and compile a .dif in one single step, all from the editor.

A new program patch and an official tutorial for using the program with Torque will be up within a few days. With this, you will be able to export a .map and compile a .dif in one single step, all from the editor.

We want to make sure everything works perfectly before it goes on the main page, but if you want to try it out now, it's all there.

Is this program an Upgrade to the Cartography tool? or is it a seperate thing all together?
Do I need one for the other? Does it pay to get them both?

It's a seprate tool all together. There is no official fully integrated way to export DIF objects out of it. You must, instead, use Mapp2Dif to convert exported MAP files. It's a pretty powerfull tool but keep in mind that there is no "Torque Pipline" for 3D world studio, and there probably will never be one.

.DTS on ther otherhand is coming, but its a community effort.

Yes there is. Simply tell it where map2dif is, and where to export to, and boom, there it is..DTS on ther otherhand is coming, but its a community effort.

(I am in development phase now so I really cant wait for the Torque world builder sad to say :(
As an indie developer $70 for each is a lot of money so I am looking for some good advice whether to get both of them since I (and from what it sounds like a lot of people) have an incredibly difficult time with QuArK.

3dws is great, better grid than Cshop had, you don't need the Torque Pipelin which is awesome because it fuxored with even correct geometry on occasion, it can export a .mis, and now has dts referencing.. I highly recomend it, but I also agree 70$ is a lot... worth it IMO.

QuArK is great IMO, but most people have a problem with the controls and have a hard time forming correct geometry with it.3dws is great, better grid than Cshop had, you don't need the Torque Pipelin which is awesome because it fuxored with even correct geometry on occasion, it can export a .mis, and now has dts referencing.. The final version of the program will be able to launch a map in Torque, with brushes, meshes, terrain, and entities, straight out of the box.

Quote:It's a pretty powerfull tool but keep in mind that there is no "Torque Pipline" for 3D world studio, and there probably will never be one. This is incorrect. World Studio is being designed to integrate with Torque completely. .dts import is presently being developed by the community, because I am busy with terrain, but if I finish terrain and the .dts loader isn't done, or has any problems, I will make one myself. I also plan to support complete .mis export with terrain, brushes, and meshes.
