Making the hard drive optional seems like a bad move to me.

Just a note: You will be able to download games without a hard drive; you will just need a memory card instead.

I'd like to encourage everyone here to remember that a console is not a substitute for a high powered PC... you certainly aren't going to be developing games using the 360 as your development machine :P

Hmm...pretty shitty move. I might buy PS3 instead of this. Microsoft is getting pretty greedy now and I really don't think $400 is worth it for some extra features. Hell, $300 isn't even worth it. I mean, for the technology you're getting with the 360, yes, its worth the money but if Microsoft wants to get over 1 billion users they'll need a lower price. I wonder how Sony will handle the PS3 pricing.

$400 is not alot of money. The $400 XBox 360 will be totaly worth it when it comes out. The one thing thats always turned me away from Playstations is the fact that they require memory cards. I sold my PS1 for a N64 and stopped using my PS2(and later sold) when I got my X Box. The 360 comes with a wireless controller, a headset, an ethernet cable, and a 20Gb removable hard drive. Pretty sweet deal, IMHO.

Hack a decent OS onto it and you could.

A bit of good news... the wired controller on the cheaper 360 model works with your PC as well.

@Pat - Very interesting. I guess most of the xbox arcade games follow similar size limits as internet released indie games.A bit of good news... the wired controller on the cheaper 360 model works with your PC as well.

I'll wait.... I just think it's weird that the next two machines I purchace will be a Mac that runs on Intel chips and a Microsoft box that runs on PPC chips..... Madness!!!

$100 for a 20gig HD is insane.

I would just like to point out that the cheaper, less feature GameCube actually continued to beat the Xbox in sales for the first 3 years of its existence contrary to popular xbox owner belief. (Like it was mentioned earlier)$100 for a 20gig HD is insane.

Sebastien - oops. I didn't know that. I stand corrected.

@Sebastien - I think the confusion was that Xbox did better in the states while GC did better world wide. And that hard drive is a laptop drive which is partially why it is more expensive.

I dont think it is that bad of an idea sense that is where they lost a good portion of their profits because people moded the xbox and were able to put all the games on it. So they make money by providing an detachable HD so if something like this happens again they are still making a profit. Also if you look at the two prices and compare what you get for the items with the higher end one and how much those items would cost individually, you would see that its a real nice deal for everything you get.

Now that's how you make people feel ripped off if they don't get the delux edition. ;)

And what were they doing with this? They took the current headset, and voided it of all cool design.

I hate to admit it but you'd actually be an idiot to get the $299.99 core system. Think about it. You HAVE to buy a memory card for $39.99 sooner or later if you plan to save your games. Making the real base price of the core system $339.99. Now for $60 more you can have a 20 gig hard drive to save your games and a lot more. Theres no question that the $399.99 premium system is the only option.-Ajari-

If I'm picking one up, I'm gonna shell out a few hundred dollars for a machine that doesn't have any games I'm excited about...That's all I meant :) The graphics are pretty neat, that's for sure...the content though is....I dunno...not exciting
