What is Nintendo's "Revolutionary" weapon?
by Ajari Wilson · in General Discussion · 07/08/2005 (8:33 am) · 166 replies
I know I'm a big geek for starting this thread. Sorry if it has already been talked about. Like most of us here, I've been following the next generation systems and being an owner of all 3 consoles I have to admit that even though not much information has been told about the Nintendo Revolution, I'm not very excited about the system. (not that I'm too excited about anything "real" I've seen for the 360 or PS3 either) I hear it will be under powered compared to the 360 and the PS3. I've seen the little Metroid Prime 3 demo that looked almost exactly like the game cube version. And the Nintendo spokeperson (Regie Fills-Amie?) for that event was boasting about how "powerful" the system is."As you can see, the Revolution can more than hold it's own when it comes to graphical power". I would have been embarased to show that demo. I'm suprised he got that sentence out with a straight face. Nintendo is a stubborn company that always shoots themselves in the foot with their consoles (violence, cartridge, online, DVD, kiddie image and design, and now HDTV) but still manage to survive through Pokemon or the GBA.
"Revolution" so far means I get to play old games I've long forgotten about from an online service (I'm glad the big N is breaking new ground and changing the industry with online play. Now Microsoft and Sony need to get on the boat), I won't be playing the best looking games compared to the 360 and the PS3, and my system will most likeley look like a teched out Poptart. We have a lot to look forward to from Nintendo.
Anyway, despite my dissapointment with Nintendo and my lack of enthusiasm twards their new system, I am very eager to see this "mystery controller" they have up their sleeves. And I would like to ask you what you think or hope it will be.
This is what I hope Nintendo does to "revolutionize" the industry. The controller is obviously going to have some kind of touch screen (whoopee...) device but what I'm hoping for is some kind of VR headset. (Not like Vurtual Boy but a real VR headset) You ever wonder what happened to VR from the early 90's? Hasn't technology evolved far enough so that VR is very much a possability now? Screw HDTV and the limited pariphrial vision TV gives you in games like Halo, Burnout, and Metroid Prime. I'm tired of being hit from the sides by an enemy that I would have seen had I had the wrap around vision I do in real life. What better way to emerse yourself into the game world than to see nothing but the game and hear nothing but the game with 5.1 headphones. The screen can wrap around the inside of the headset slightly past your parephrials up, down, left, and right so you can never quite see the edge of the screen. The VR headset could also flip up when the game is paused or be flipped up manually. Having the headset wireless would probably be the best thing to do as well if it doesn't hurt costs too bad.
If the system came out for around $200 and the VR headset was $150 or less and came bundled with the system, I would pick it up over the 360 and the PS3 even if it had Nintendo 64 graphics. That alone is something I have NEVER experienced before. That would be a true revolution in games as we know them. And also may be why Nintendo is not supporting HD. But again, Nintendo is a very stubborn company that hates to evolve anything until it comes back to bite them in the ass (cartridge, online, kiddie image and design).
(Least paragraph I swear) To keep the cost down I would probably leave the 5.1 headphones optional. And leave the gameplay completley up to the controller, meaning no head movement will effect the game at all. I feel like a stupid 15 year old (not that all 15 year olds are stupid) with a "great" idea but it is fun to speculate and hope (I'm at work bored anyway). And plus I can say to the world "I KNEW IT!!!" if it is true. Well anyway, what do you guys think is this "revolutionary" device Nintendo has up their sleeves?

I read that the change is going to be with the controller supporting a tilt feedback. In other words the controller is supposed to offer resistance the more you tilt it in the game. While it doesn't sound to amazing to me when I look at Wario Twisted it makes sense.

I am still wondering whether the gyroscopic aspect of the controllers is the revolutionary part... I know it isn't a screen on the controller since some Nintendo Rep or another specifically said that it isn't :M

@Matt: LOL Nah man I wasn't talking about you when I said people who have gotten really upset at my comments about Nintendo need to get a girl and a life. I honestly didn't think anybody really got upset to the point of anger twards what I said. But if any of you did, then....well yeah, you need to get a girl and a life (maybe even some help). None of this is really that serious.
I'm not just some Nintendo hater. I've always owned every system they have ever come out with (except for that virtual boy thing and the 20 million variations of game boy...I guess I wouldn't rub my nuts on the DS either). I still want them to be around. The industry wouldn't be the same without them. They just make a lot of stupid moves (GBA Micro? For what? For $30 more I could get a DS which plays GBA games and then some). But enough of that. My favorite game from Nintendo? Star Fox 64. The Game Cube version was horrible. That added to my disgust with them. Yuck! Hopefully the Revolution Star Fox will keep the game off the ground with the exception of a couple of tank levels.

@Peter Robinson: Good points about the Pikimin and Nintendogs. Actually Halo 2 as well. I had NO idea what was going on story wise. Too much back and forth between the cheif and arbetor. The rooms did start to get repedative near the end of the 1st Halo as well. I guess if your inside of a structure/building/ship, why wouldn't all the rooms look alike.@Matt: LOL Nah man I wasn't talking about you when I said people who have gotten really upset at my comments about Nintendo need to get a girl and a life. If you're not willing to have fun because you're afraid of looking like a kid, then maybe you need to grow up a little. If your talking to me then you obviously haven't been reading my very large and boring rants. How many times have I mentioned that I own a Game Cube and a GBA? How many times have I mentioned that I played Pikimin 2, Mario Kart:DD, RE4, and other current and past Nintendo games? How many times have I mentioned that I still plan to buy a Revolution? When I talk about Nintendo, my words are from someone who is a Nintendo fan. I still enjoy the games, I just feel they've been digging themselves in a hole with their fans and my respect and confidence in them is getting lesser every generation.

Star Fox on the 64 was great! I played all the way through the game cube one just hoping it would get better. It never really did. Even though the entire game was on the ground they still managed to finish with Andros with you in the RWing. I honestly thought it was a joke and half expected a "real" boss of the game after him. The whole game felt like Star Fox meets Land Before Time. Why? You've mentioned a lot of bad moves by Nintendo like the mini disks and I didn't really care, but the Star Fox thing is a great argument! On the other hand it was rare's last game for Nintendo. After a horrible game like that why wouldn't Nintendo want to get rid of them? The real mistake on Nintendo's part was letting rare make the game in the first place.-Peter

Wasn't the last boss the aparoid queen. I remember the girl was like "Fox she's afraid of us!". Did that thing combine with Andros? I don't really remember. Oh it did because those things were parasites, that's right!
The first two stages were beautiful. I had tears in my eyes cause I knew this was gonna be even better than Star Fox 64. They messed with my "roll" buttons but it was ok, I could learn to live with it. Then the running levels started and never really seemed to stop. Controlls got all jacked up. Even the graphics took a sharp turn to bland and ugly. I remember saying to myself in my head while playing, "this isn't so bad, this isn't so bad, you've played worse, your money wasn't wasted, it'll get better". Normally after finishing a game even if I'm not thrilled with it I'll go ahead and let it collect dust on the shelf, but not this time. I had to get it out of my house. Even if nobody would buy it back I honeslty would have given it to some kid passing by on the street.

Hey why isn't anyone trying to make a Star Fox style game with Torque? I'm not talking about a Colony Wars type of game. I mean 3rd person, on rails (most of the time) action shooter. I really wanna make something like that. I've wanted to for a very long time. I have tons of ideas and the art and sound would be completley covered, but I'm not a programmer and we don't have one. So my ideas are focused on simpler ideas that I feel my team and I can do on our own.Is anybody out there working on, or know of a team that's working on this type of game?

A rail style shooter would work pretty well with the torque engine. Personally thought I would love to see a space combat game though.

By rail style are we talking Area 51 or are we talking linear like HL2?

No not like Area 51 or HL2. The game I'm talking about is 3rd person, behind view, all real time pollys, the game is constantly moving forward, and you have good field of movement. What I mean by that is if you go up or down, left or right, the screen will move with you but in a limited fasion. You never heard of Star Fox or Panzer Dragoon? -Ajari-

You claim to be a Nintendo fan. Re-read your post in that other Nintendo thread and seriously make that claim again. Your main argument, which is so ludicrous that I really can't stand and watch it lest someone actually believes it, is that Nintendo is so far out of touch that they're losing this 'console war' that people like yourself have invented. You've said you both enjoy Nintendo's games and their appeal but think they're not appealing to the american young adult male market, which you yourself are a part of.
Now, if their games appeal to you, why not the rest of the market?
Quite simply, because it's cool to hate Nintendo. I don't think for a second any gamer wouldn't enjoy playing their games, and if they didn't have this false image problem (which attitudes like yours don't help, Ajari) there'd be a lot more doing so. Unfortunately, they're all missing out.

And listen to yourself. This is what you said I said:
This is what Peter Robinson said:
I never once said anything about Americans or males or young in that post. Where did you see that in the post you refered to? Notice I put in parenthesis (), like myself meaning "I" still like Nintendo games. I even said in one of my most recent posts on this forum that I don't hate Nintendo, and that I am a fan. Just dissapointed. Then I added that they do try and cater to the adult from time to time. And then lastly, they do cater to children, and there are lots of them in this world so they will get paid regardless.
There is no denying that they are the Disney of the game industry. And who is Disney's #1 audience? The kids. Yeah there movies have some slight adult jokes because they realize the parents have to sit through the movie too.
So through all this Matt. What's your point? Everything I said about Nintendo I really feel that way. I have a lot of pointless opinions about a lot of issues big and small. Some poeple agree with me and some don't. Life goes on and Nintendo still makes a ton of money no matter what. You seem really angry at me and you wanna prove that what? I'm fake? I'm a Nintendo hater to be cool? lol Cool on the internet? How old are you man, really? Cause you act like Nintendo is your life. When you get a little older and get your first job, your first car payment, your first girlfriend, your first home or apartment, and your paying $50+ for gass a week to get to work and back (and I drive a small sports car, not even an SUV), you'll realize that there is more to get upset about than some guy on the internet bitching about what he dislikes about Nintendo to chew up the clock. Bottom line: It's not that serious. Their paid and we ain't, no where near like they are anyway. Nothing I can say is going to hurt Nintendo, so what are you angry about?

Matt what's the problem? I thought it was over man. I thought we moved on to a new subject. Didn't you say you we're finished with all of this debating? You not mad are you? Over a debate about Nintendo on the internet? lol C'mon man. Why are your posts starting to lean more twards attacking me, and less about my views on Nintendo's ways. And listen to yourself. This is what you said I said:
Quote:Nintendo is so far out of touch that they're losing this 'console war' that people like yourself have invented. You've said you both enjoy Nintendo's games and their appeal but think they're not appealing to the american young adult male market, which you yourself are a part of.Huh? I think you hear what you wanna hear don't you. Well this is the quote that I was responding to, followed by my response:
This is what Peter Robinson said:
Quote:On the other hand that would be why Nintendo's next console won't be $400 or even $300. More likely $200 or lower. That way parrents will be willing to buy it for Christmas or birthdays. At least Nintendo knows its market. I don't think its hurting them. This is what I said to reply to him:
Quote:As far as their "kiddy" image hurting Nintendo, I think it is and it isn't. Everyone who has grown up playing Nintendo's games from the NES and SNES eras have grown up. Therefore most of them are interested in more mature games than what the majority of Nintendo's games are. They have moved on. Some still play Nintendo games (like myself). And Nintendo does try to cater to the adult gamer from time to time.Notice the key words in my quote. most people who have grown up have all moved on to more mature platforms if their still playing games at all. Some still play Nintendo games. Some but not all. The majority play Xbox and PS2 now. At least from my personal experiance. If they had to choose one system, it would be Sony's machine first. I think that's proven by Sony's sales. Everybody has a PS2. I can't say the same for the Game Cube. (but we've had that argument already)
But on the other hand, there is never a short supply of children in the world.
As much as other people might bash Nintendo I have to say I own a Gamecube and enjoy the games out for it and the same goes for my GBA. Sure they might not be the winners of the best technology but at least they can still release games that are original and sometimes that is all it takes to have a great game. Sure DOOM 3 might have had amazing graphics but I enjoyed playing Marble Blast more than I did enjoy playing DOOM 3 since playing Marble Blast was something diffrent from a FPS which I see dozens of on the shelfs.

And there it is, that great assumption that you seem to be quite good at. Let's see, I'm a senior collections officer for the largest collection agency in Australia. Been renting for a while, paying $50 a fortnight fuel for my car (an '88 Falcon, hardly effecient) and no trouble on the girlfriend front. I have no delusions about being cool on the internet, being anonymous makes that all irrelevant. I'm talking in society (you know, real life), and the attitude towards Nintendo there. The people I've met that hate Nintendo are as clueless as yourself when it comes to their latest generation.
In that passage you so eloquently quoted, again, you assume that all adults want to play wanton murder simulators. I don't, and I'm pretty damn sure I'm an adult. The more mature (not older) a person is, the more their tastes tend to revert back to your wonderfully favourite 'kiddy' genres. Get it right - Disney movies and games are for kids. Nintendo et al games are for everyone. There is an enourmous difference there if you can get your head past the fact that the Mario series has bright colors.
You just sit there blathering about why Nintendo is going down and failing when it is quite clear that in pure monetary terms, the only thing that matters, they're ahead, by far. It's quite frustrating, especially when I provided you with solid figures and you just assumed (again) that Sony's talking about hardware losses only. As if they'd not try to make their figures appear better by not including software revinue, seriously. If you are disheartened with the way they're going, that's fine great and dandy. If you want to make other people disheartened about something you are to make your views more conformist by spouting all sorts of utter BS, then I tend not to like it.

Well, I never actually played Panzer Dragoon and the only Starfox games I've played are the SNES ones...

My favorite games are the ones with immersive worlds and epic plots like Eternal Darkness or Advent Rising (sans the technical problems). Nintendo has openly said that the Revolution will not be designed for games like this. That is the sole reason Silicon Knights parted ways (and I am parting ways). The problem is, they're so darn good at it, we're all going to be missing out on some potentially great games. I have no doubts that any Zelda or Metroid game will rock, but I can't help but imagine what they could be on something like the XBox 360.
And, there is some worry in me that the Revolution will end up being like the DS. I don't like the DS because it is gimicky. So far, there has been nothing (in my opinion) that the touch screen (or the second screen) is really useful for. The only genre I can see fitting it is RTS, and the PC has more than enough RTSs to satisfy me. Come on, it doesn't even have analog control which Mario 64 (in its first incarnation) was partially designed to show off. Sure the touch screen is supposed to emulate that, and some argue that it works for them. But, does it work as good as an analog stick. I can't imagine anyone believing that. But then, I don't own a DS and have only played it a couple of times, so I'm not really in a position to judge (though it seems I already have).
08/24/2005 (9:06 am)
It seems I am in the same boat as Ajari. I am not mad at Nintendo because I want to hate them or think they are a terrible company. I'm mad because they are a great company that makes great games, but they're not doing what I want them to do. People that don't care for Nintendo anymore would never take a serious part in a discussion like this. They're indifferent. My favorite games are the ones with immersive worlds and epic plots like Eternal Darkness or Advent Rising (sans the technical problems). Quote:you assume that all adults want to play wanton murder simulators.Wow your a master at "placing words in mouth". Where did you lern that technique, from my mother in law? When have I ever said anything about murder as the only forms of adult games? You obvioulsy read my posts and then make up what you want to believe.
This is what I said on the 21st:
Quote:I consider Metroid a more adult game. There's no blood to be found unless you count green alien blood from time to time. This new Zelda: Princess something looks to be more of an adult themed game. It has a little blood but I'm sure it'll come out rated "T". Splinter Cell has no blood or gore and it's rated "M". Actually this Zelda has more blood in it than Splinter Cell. My point is it doesn't have to be Mortal Kombat to be considered an adult game. Now here is your quote again:
Quote:you assume that all adults want to play wanton murder simulators. Now how does what you just said make sense? Your obviously grabbing for anything to try and win a pointless argument, even if it includes making things up. Your starting to take this way to seriously. Your really angry and upset with me aren't you. That's halarious. You act like you own a good amount of stock in Nintendo and my words are a great threat to the future of your company. The reason why I asked how old you are is because I had good reason to believe you were younger.
Quote:I'm pretty damn sure I'm an adult. The more mature (not older) a person is, the more their tastes tend to revert back to your wonderfully favourite 'kiddy' genres. Get it right - Disney movies and games are for kids. Nintendo et al games are for everyone. As far as all of Nintendo's games being geard twards both children and adults. I'm sure they would like to think that, but I just don't believe that most people who play Madden, Splinter Cell, GTA, Halo, Ninja Gaiden, Poker, Crimson Skies, Devil May Cry, and Tiger Woods Golf would be interested in Mario Sunshine, Kirby Air Race, Pikimin, Mario Kart, Pokemon Arena, Mario Tennis, and Yoshi's Cookies anymore. Like I said before, not all of their stuff is like this but the majority of Nintendo grown games seem to be of the lolypop flavor. I happen to like most all of them (except for Pokemon). Most people aren't as diverse in the choice of games they would spend money on though. And last time I checked, Mickey Mouse games had the same level of maturity, and same tone of music and atmosphere as the latest Mario adventure.
Adam, your points were dead on and I couldn't agree more.

Edit: This was fun for a while but now it's getting silly. I'm done for now. Tomorrow is my birthday so I'm gonna be out chillin' all day, and not at work debating a pointless argument. Matt I'll be back on in a couple of days to see what other halarious and greatly exaggerated hate fueled statments you make.

In all your posts you have basically reiterated several times:
Nintendo have the smallest market share in home consoles
Nintendo Gamecube has less games overall than other consoles
You don't like the Gamecube because it insults your masculinity, or manhood, or something stupid like that.
If you're not willing to have fun because you're afraid of looking like a kid, then maybe you need to grow up a little.
Halo 2 did not set any records other than fastest-selling console game. It was sold on the success of the first, which was an overhyped beast, that didn't break altogether much ground. Look at the difference in ratings between the PC version and X-Box version. The best selling game of all time? It was Myst until recently surpassed by The Sims. Games accessible by everyone tend to get purchased by everyone, and the sooner Sony and Microsoft spot the success that Nintendo enjoy in that field they'll tag along.
