Laptop Mouse Freezes

I start the demo or the FPS Starter Kit and the mouse just hesitates for several seconds before moving at all. The mouse is so unresponsive, so slow to respond that it is unusable.
I have a Fujitsu Lifebook Series E with an ATI Mobility 128 AGP 4X video card. I have tried to find an XP driver for my video card, but the closest I can get is a W2K driver. Before I installed that, I could not any Torque products at all. My laptop has a Pentium III 847 MHz processor and 512MB ram. I have all the minimum requirements met.
Any ideas?
