Top 10 Games... of all time. And prove why.

What are your choices for top 10 games of all time?
Not just what are they... what makes them great? what sets them apart from the other games in their genres and what helped them to push the envelope? Where did they go right where others have gone wrong? And did trends in the game industry at the time of release help influence their rise to power (or in some cases their failure). I'm interested to see what everyone thinks regarding this topic.

Ultima VII - all the reasons mentioned above. I loved how Shamino would leave if you stole too much or killed without cause. The game that kept me losing years of my life on a computer when Space Rogue's disk died.
MechWarrior - the original mech pilot game with great story and strategy and revenge! The perfect game for the Zenith 248 computer!
Daggerfall - First big world I truely loved. Getting lost inthe dungeons, getting lost in the wilds, traveling to all the different countries. Levitating while riding horse back. :) Jumping out of my skin in the very first dungeon when the skeleton appears behind you and roars!
Fallout 2 (moreso than 1) - It delved into immorality as much as morality with the options in drug addiciton, prostitution of the player or NPC spouse, choosing whether or not to be a porn star (and living with the consequences), homosexual and lesbian marriage (first game I know of that allowed it or even addressed it without condemning it). Killing a child either by accident or on purpose and becoming a child killer which made you the ultimate evil (and being an outcast and chased by both good and evil alike)or killing too many people for no reason and being seen as a psycho . When will the dark side of humanity be re-visited in a game with such even handedness? (unlike the GTA series which revels in it).
The Movies - first game that let me make movies and share them on the internet as well as dealing with snobby celebrity tantrums. With the addition of the Stunt Pack addon is even better. Lula the 3D empire did preceed it but being an adult game it had limited availability.
Princess Maker 2 - great child rearing game with something like 57 major endings with variances on how well the child does at the end job and whether she marries the Prince, becomes queen, or even has children and is a good parent. Shame it was never released in the US.
Ultima Online - Online RPG with consequences! Go romping in the woods with a backpack full of loot and die? Too bad! Be a murderer? Get a bounty on your head. Cut up the remains of other players and take the heads to collect the bounty! Has it been done since?!? I played it the first 2 or 3 years when you could be a bad guy and break into other players homes. The guilds, the massive multi-guild battles that would erupt with no real advanced prepping. SIGH. The holdiay themed servers for Thanks Giving and Christmas - and such. Any ex "Justice League of Britannia" or "Order of the Silver Star" members out there? Of course - this was before EverJoke came along and took away consequences and turned online rpg players into whiney spoiled brats!
Darklands - I still play this one, one of the best character creation systems ever!
Mega Traveller 1 & 2 - the best character creation system ever, you could spend hours rolling your character and choosing their careeer path and even having them die before you got into the actual game. You have to try it just for this experience. The game itself was okay but the creation system alone was like playing a game of most excellent quality!
X-Com: UFO Defense - The ultimate squad based game of all time. I still play it sometimes. Always duplicated, never surpassed! Build the bases and defend them, research trees, alien snipers, lots of alien types, fight in and around the civilian populous and take the blame when they die. Dark and suspensful with great music that enhance dthe experience. Only complaint was the lack of gravity and no squad tactics by the aliens.
SSI Gold Box Series - I lost my early 20's to those games. Being able to import your characters from the previous game to continue their adventures made for powerful attachment and concern for your peope.
Zaxxon - My favorite arcade game of all time, I still play it when I trip across it.
Mrs. Pacman - For "empowering" girls and getting them into the arcade.
Roller Coaster Tycoon - for getting my wife into playing games so she doesn't criticize my game playing (as much).

I must disagree... the only consequences in Ultima Online were for NOT being a royal bastard. There were no real consequences for being a PK.

There were penalties for PK'ers cliff. The guild I was in would frequently hunt PK'ers and collect the bounty.

So was I... it wasn't much of a penalty compared to the penalty for being a decent, upstanding person.

Consider this!
There are computer programs to play and win at the other games like chess and checkers.
As far as I know, none exists for Mancala.
I tried for a few months many years ago but set it aside. I may return to it some day.

By that same logic, Go(look it up) would be the best game. Most the time a newb to Go can slaughter most(if not all) Go programs, and the ones newbs can't beat are beat by millions of people. Or so I read.

2) Rez. Synasthesia space techno shooter. Rock on.
3) Shadow of the Colossus. The first game that ever made me cry. Anyone who's 'beaten' the game will understand, and those who haven't truly are missing out. The most amazing thing in my life.
11/15/2006 (2:08 pm)
1) Psychonauts. Easily one of the funniest, most twisted games I have ever played. The gameplay is fun, the story is one of the most entertaining, and the voice actors are an absolute riot. "I am the Milkman, my milk is delicious."2) Rez. Synasthesia space techno shooter. Rock on.

I just absolutely love this game. I have been playing Dungeons and Dragons for a while so I was very excited when I heard it was being ported into a videogame. When NWN came out I assumed that it would be too laggy on my slow old heap of a computer but it worked beautifully. I really enjoyed the single player campaign but it's strength was in multiplayer which had me hooked - I'd organise with friends to meet up in "so and so tavern" at 4:00 for a drink and kill and what not.
Then I got into the Aurora Toolset, played around with that and had heaps of fun making my own campaigns and DMing them. And that's partly what spurred me to buy Torque, the next level up from AT.
2) The Zelda Series
What can I say? I play these still now with my friends and the excitement never stops. We can talk about Zelda for hours after we've played and the topic never spins off to about how AWESOME or UBER the graphics were (I have a hate for discussing graphics in computer games - I'm a gameplay person). The storyline was wonderful and the characters were memorable... my Nintendo broke last year.....
3) Pokemon Red and Blue
As a long time Pokemon fan (I was 8 or 9 during the massive Pokemon craze here in Aus) Pokemon Red was a godsend. Finally -I- could be the "greatest master of them all!!" and it amazed me that I could actually battle with my pokemon against other people through this mysterious "link cable". Pokemon had me hours of fun and although my old Gameboy Pocket is gathering dust in some unworthy cupboard I can now enjoy Fire Red and Leaf Green on my Gameboy SP!
4) Heroes of Might and Magic
I wasn't really into turn based games... Until I discovered Heroes! I loved this game and it's such a shame to see it getting worse and worse. Perhaps one day I'll create a game to relight the turn based candle.
5) Tekken
Simply provided hours of fun trying to learn those damn combos so I could beat this particularly annoying friend who happened to own the game (unlike me).
That's all I can think of right now.

The best all time game of all: imho
Riven
Great story, lots of scenery, Fantastic rides, just lots to do and see. The puzzles were a bit too difficult, butI loved the game, and still do. I've replayed it about 5 times, and havent tired of it.
Myst Revelation is about the only other game that I've liked just as much.
And, I can still be found lurking around Until Uru.
