Logo Requirement Now On Product Page

This battle continues to rage over on Indie Gamer forums. The tide has turned there, and now it seems we are being painted as an evil company that is out to absolutely screw all indies. Here is the thread: forums.indiegamer.com/showthread.php?p=35231#post35231
So, in an effort to be more transparent, here is the change. If this is not big enough, we'll put it in bold letters.
Here is the change:
Also added it to the TGE product page.
I can't imagine another company trying harder than GG, but people continue to look for the downside of a company that is doing too much, I guess. I'm going home for a while.

INDIE LICENSE: No Royalties - Publish Anywhere. GarageGames pioneered the breakthrough Indie License when we first published the Torque Game Engine in 2001, and we have continued to refine and relax the requirements for this incredible deal. In summary, T2D is only $100 per programmer for the full source code to this powerful game engine. As long as your company has less than $250,000 in sales, you can publish your game anywhere, for any price without any royalties or further commitement to GarageGames except for displaying the T2D logo upon game start up. We like to say, "it is as close to free as we could make it." It's been said before, but bears repeating, "there is no better game development deal in the world!" Commercial Licenses Available for only $395 per programmer seat.
Also added it to the TGE product page.

Garage Games is the best deal I've seen for indies. It's sad some people feel it's not enough. I found the indie license requirements easy to understand.

Many times have I played a game and the engine was advertised and looked very professional, using fade in and out effects I can't recall a game I have played in the past 5 years that didn't have some advertising screens.
Garage Games is always working hard on thier product and really do deserve the advertisement that this creates.

Basically it's a simple requirement, we will let you develop games with a cheap framework if you advertise our engine with it. Otherwise you need a commercial license which covers a small approximation of what the advertising would pull in with new customers. Many times have I played a game and the engine was advertised and looked very professional, using fade in and out effects I can't recall a game I have played in the past 5 years that didn't have some advertising screens.

No offence... but everything that can be said has already been said on a different thread

I really hope people take the time to talk to GG directly before they go flame baiting. A lot of these things could have bee avoided.
Forums are great and all for comunity efforts. If people have a problem with GG they should take it up with GG.
Edit: On a side note, I checked both of the forums over there and they both seem to sway in the favor of GG.

I don't see any problems in adding the GG logo (Supply a TGE logo and I will add that as well)... I have it on my splash screen and my GUI (info about TGE is also in the help menu)... It's the least I could do seeing as I saved thousands buying TGE.:) GG ROCKS!

There are always people who want a "free lunch". Game design is no exception. If you could make a game engine that was free, had no licensing requirements, came with all the necessary sound and graphics files and constructed the storylines, then - and only then - would those people be happy. Of course, many of them are too short-sided to realize that once all that is added in, they won't have any personality left to inject in their game.
Just realize that many of us are honored to be associated with GG and see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do what we've always wanted to do.

Don't let it get you down, Jeff. There are lots of us who appreciate what Garage Games has done. I, for one, would have needed years to save up the money to get myself a shot at having a commercial-quality game. Even if my game sells only one copy, you guys made a dream come true for me - and I'm sure for many others. There are always people who want a "free lunch". Game design is no exception. Personally, I think its a good thing to add the logo to your game's intro. It can do nothing but help the community around torque by adding awareness of the engine and garagegames, which in turn makes torque an even more powerful engine. Win-win for a few seconds of startup time.
04/05/2005 (11:35 am)
I think the issue some people had was that they didn't see the requirement until after they bought the engine. Not like its a huge deal, but I can see their point. On the other hand, I knew about the requirement before I bought torque, although I can't remember where I read it. just my 2 cents, although I've yet to save up for T2D =P

Heh, personally, as a newbie, i wouldn't mind putting it on my game anyways. I mean, if you really appreciate T2D, you probably would've gone and read through the .plans, and see how much work the GG team put in. It's just a logo anyways; it's not like people are gonna go "AH! ITS A LOGO! n00b13!!!!" -___-just my 2 cents, although I've yet to save up for T2D =P

Anyway, I think that GG is doing us all a great favor. If people don't like the policies that GG applies to the engines, go check into licensing the Unreal Engine or the Doom3 engine. See how much you have to pay to get one of those -- and your company better have far more than $250,000 in sales if you're going that route.
Thanks, GG - you've got my vote (and my money soon!)

EDIT: Fixed typo.

I'm totally amazed at how people are so concerned about the "sacrifices" they have to make to get a $100 product. I also find it amazing that people are concerned that they have to pay a whopping $400 if their company makes more then $250,000!! Actually, that one infuriates me... we're talking $400 for the commercial license, not $40K!!Anyway, I think that GG is doing us all a great favor. That said, everyone requires a logo these days, and to remove it you have to pay $10,000+ in most cases, and are STILL required to let folks know in the credits etc and so forth "Powered by x Engine"
04/05/2005 (11:54 am)
A more fair comparison wouldn't be unreal or doom, but maybe the A6 engine, it's competitive with TGE in terms of price, but look at the licensing options. You have to $995 to remove the friggin logo! I paid it at one time, and tried for over a year to get it to work the way I want. Then I looked at the features comparison on Conitecs own site, and realized I NEEDED TGE.That said, everyone requires a logo these days, and to remove it you have to pay $10,000+ in most cases, and are STILL required to let folks know in the credits etc and so forth "Powered by x Engine"

Dead horse, beat. Again. Just like Geryon in Devil May Cry 3.

The admin over there was definitely right about something. There does seem to be some morbid fascination with this topic of conversation. I think it has something to do with arguing about something clearly defined in the EULA by saying that "everyone" ignores the EULA. Which is just strangely intruiging to me as a developer who deals with licensing every day.Dead horse, beat. Again. Just like Geryon in Devil May Cry 3.

As for the scripts issue, to me thats a no brainer. Distributing the scripts would mean anyone could make games with T2D without ever paying for a license, so its obvious why that requirement exists. There is nothing stopping people giving away the source scripts to other T2D users, which could be done via a resource. So again I can't really see why people are having issues with the EULA.
All in all, the two requirements imo are very minor considering what is actually been provided for only $80
I honestly don't know why people have a problem with the logo, I guess some people will never be happy with anything :P

I'm sure I read that you can get around the logo "problem" (if it really is a problem), by paying a little extra for the commercial license. If a games worth playing people won't care about that extra 2 seconds viewing your logo then the GG logo (or vice-versa). Personally I like been able to show a GG or T2D logo on startup (depending on whether its TGE or T2D based)As for the scripts issue, to me thats a no brainer. I think it is a small price to pay to have the logo displayed. Plus it helps advertise GG. Hey if that brings someone back to buy another GG game then it is going to benefit everyone.
04/05/2005 (1:16 pm)
I read somehere recently that there was a program that has been downloaded by the thousands and it took something like 4 years for someone to realize that if you read the EULA you would have seen instructions on how to get paid something like $1500 from the developer to the first person to notice it. I think it is a small price to pay to have the logo displayed. Plus it helps advertise GG. Hey if that brings someone back to buy another GG game then it is going to benefit everyone.
