RTS documentation

by monki (Wesley Beary) · in RTS Starter Kit · 02/25/2005 (10:23 am) · 21 replies

Hey everybody, long time no see. My last semester was crazy. Back at the wheel now. As I was working I stumbled across some docs that I had written up with the help of the rest of the RTS Starter Kit team. They had been scheduled for inclusion with the pack, but with a number of last minute changes to fix bugs and get things out the door it became out of sync with how some things actually were. Lacking the time to fix it the docs were simply removed. I still don't really have the time to fix them up on my own. So, I have a proposition for all of you. I'll provide what I came up with, many of you may find some value in that by itself. If while using and/or reading the docs you come across any mistakes, post here and I will make the neccesary corrections. Hopefully this way everybody will win, and then the docs can be in ready for the next release.

So without further adou, the rts docs (please keep this to yourselves, leaking it to people that don't have the Starter Kit would be no good):
* NOTE * - This documentation is released as is and was based on a somewhat earlier version of the pack. If you find errors please report them in this thread and I will fix them. Thank you in advance, I hope that you find them useful.

Will jump right into this for sure!

It appears the .access isn't quite configured properly--I cut/paste both the login and the password into the login window, and failed.

I got connected to it, I typed it in as is, using a zero in the password.

Wes' doco rocks. :) Needs some updating, but the base is great. In general, Wes' stuff tends to kick substantial amounts of ass.

.. Just thought I'd brag on him. Lot of people don't know it, but Wes was one of the main RTS SK developers.

Just as an added note, it was not working correctly, I must have mistyped something. But it has been fixed. Thanks to Stephen for pointing that out.

@Josh: Heh, thanks. It is helpful and appreciated. Need to get my name out after my semester of slumber and get trucking again...

Continued development...

I have some revisions that I have yet to finish revising/writing and adding in to these docs. I also imagine many of you could provide useful content and additions. As such I decided to slap this up onto a wiki. It can be found at:

monki.geemus.com/gg/rtsdocs.pl

It is a bit less attractive than the html formatted one, but it serves its purpose and should add some handy functionality. That said, this version will probably come to be more up to date than the one above (although they are as of this typing identical in content). When it comes time to change the installer that is being distributed I can then grab stuff off the wiki and reformat it into html and include it. Anything that you can add, or errors you can correct would be great. I figured that this sort of thing would be faster and easier for others to make changes, rather than sending emails back and forth with me. Let me know what you think, or if you have any questions.

Anyone have any current location for these links?

Wow... over a year later, and no new documentation. But... seriously. Where can I get ahold of these docs? The documentation that comes with the kit is not nearly as extensive as most of us would like, and the TDN RTS area is brand new... not much is on it as of yet.

Wesley, sent you an email regarding hosting your docs on TDN.
Give me a shout when you have a moment.

I'd love to see this stuff added to TDN, but I don't seem to have a copy again. We have a volunteer to add it if somebody has a copy handy, please let us know.

Does anyone have a copy of Wesley's docs?

If you do, please let us know.

I went as far as trying the "waybackmachine" with no luck, so hopefully someone out there has a copy. It would be a shame to have all that work lost.

Does anyone know what the filename is? I'm sure I downloaded and looked at it but I've looked around my hard drives and haven't found anything yet.

I tried the waybackmachine as well, should have saved you the trouble. Sorry I didn't mention that.

I think it would have been:
rtsdoc.html

or possibly(if you got a version before I converted it to html):
rtsdoc.doc

Derry, no luck on finding that file?

Wes, would anyone at GG have a copy, would it be worth giving someone there a shout?

Not sure if anyone there would have a copy or not, but I usually don't have much luck getting responses from them.

I'll send an email and see if I have any luck.

No, sorry. I think I confused this with something else. I see now the original message is from 2005, way before I created an account here.

There is a chance that I downloaded this, as I appear to have subscribed to this thread at some point. I might have the file you're looking for archived on my other computer. I'll look for it tonight.
