Torque Boot Camp was given to a group of commercial developers in Florida yesterday by Jay, Benjamin, and Matt Fairfax. We want to figure out a way to have courses for Torque, and this was the first step.

I was wondering when that was happening. I'd love to hear a post-mortem on it!

Unfortunately there arent many Torque developers out here, though you are correct that some sort of Western Canada (or even just Alberta) meeting might be cool enough to do every other month to discuss Torque, projects and game development in general.

man that would totally great.. I am located in Grande Prairie... I have been working with Torque for the past 4 months, and it has been slow going, but I would love to learn more, and a meeting like that would be just what I and some others would need.

We have toyed with the idea of having monthly TBC's and even more advanced sessions here at GG headquarters. I got all hopped up on this concept after attending a training session in 2003 at Salt Lake City for the dealer management software package that we use at my motorcycle shop, Herb's Cycle Town. But, just like all of the other million opportunties we have here at GG, implementation had to wait while other projects took their place in line. Now, this opportunity is starting to come to the top of the stack.
While is it too early to announce anything, I would not mind testing the waters a little. We have been thinking of something along the lines of $295 for a three day session here at GG in Eugene, OR (probably have them once per month). If the response makes it look like could be worth it, we would eventually have these training sessions several times a year in diferent, largely populated geographic areas (maybe even in Europe). Eventually, we could have advanced camps and even Torque certification camps.

Torque Boot Camp (TBC) was presented as part of the Synergy Summit, which is a conference in Florida. The conference worked with us to put it on.We have toyed with the idea of having monthly TBC's and even more advanced sessions here at GG headquarters. I think it's an excellent idea!

I absolutely love the idea of an inexpensive training camp session. Just the Q/A sessions with experienced Torque developers would be amazing. Kind of a supercharged, focused ICG presentation!I think it's an excellent idea!

There is a lot of torque developers in Alberta Canada? I didn't know that. DarkMind Entertainment is based in Edmonton, it would be nice to find some talent nearby to actually form a company with a studio. I've had to recruit people from every where =)Brice Johnson

I wouldn't say there are alot in Alberta, at least as far as I know... but I guess we are starting to network.. this is good news to find more Albertans frequenting here.
At the least we probably have enough people here in AB to get something going for a Torque meeting of sorts. Maybe something for the start or later in summer?

I should have a article in the Edmonton Journal soon, discussing the game industry in Alberta. I asked them to mention gargegames and gamedev not sure if they will or not. Have to wait and see. I'm trying to gain more awareness in Alberta for the industry. It's slow going though.Brice Johnson

Well the more people that we network with the better chances we have at making that a reality...

I agree that getting things going up here is slow, but the government has been pretty good lately at giving out more Film & TV Tax credits (which also apply to game dev) so time will tell if it can help.
Good call btw on the Edmonton Journal. A few of their technology/business writers have been very keen on this stuff and bringing it more into the day to day attention its readers. I was actually thinking of sending in a brief mention to the writer I have talked to in the past about Lore and its IGF nomination at this years GDC.

Edit: Lyle the same goes for you too though I dont know how reliable a trip from Grand Praire would be to the capital.

Hey Brice, I didn't know that you were in Edmonton. Drop me a line and maybe we can meet up some time for a bite to eat and discuss how to get the idea of a Game Dev User Group rolling.I agree that getting things going up here is slow, but the government has been pretty good lately at giving out more Film & TV Tax credits (which also apply to game dev) so time will tell if it can help.

Maybe us Albertans should start our own thread for discussion? or just move our discussion to emails? and let this thread focus more on its original theme.

Why not have an online courses specific to TGE? First course could be the TBC: an introduction course. You could charge $100- $175 per course. Something like they do at the Game Institute. This way people from all over can get to attend the course. You could also have it self-paced and they can complete it when they have the time. I would be very interested in this because of my schedule.
