New Game Company Name

by Wayne Eversole · in General Discussion · 11/24/2004 (5:19 am) · 8 replies

Hey all, im not sure where to post this so I just post here.
I am trying to get some ideas on a good simple company name and would like some input from everyone els.
We had a name that got missed spelled in the e-mail and when spelled correctly it is already taken so we are in need of a new company name.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

First, if you intend to go corporate or register your name as a trademark, you need to make sure the name is not "generic" and is not already used in the game industry.

Second, Find a name that expresses what you want to do (like mine, we want to make really real games). This name should not be to generic or the trademarks officer may refuse your application.

*I am not a lawyer and I have only a little understanding in this matter*

I hope I helped, I know this is not exactly what you wanted but it should help.

Pick a theme, then try variations of that. For me, I wanted a name that conveyed fun, conveyed that it was a game company, and was something that you had to think about for a second to figure out (not blunt). I get a sore thumb playing the best games (got one from Zelda Ocarina and one from Tony Hawk series) so I used that as my theme. SoreThumbGames.com was already taken (!) but RedThumbGames.com was not, so that proved to be the winner. As it turned out, "red" works better than "sore" because it reinforces a color theme in the logo, makes you think about why it's red (and thus not as blunt), and "sore" brings indirect connotations of "sore loser" with respect to gaming langauge, and you want an upbeat name.

Finding a name based on what domain names are available may seem a little backwards, but it's important for me to have a .com that's the verbatim of the company name, and it's also a good litmus test to see how original your name is. Good luck.

Some people use their name as the name of the company. Or like me, I used the initials of my best friend for my CJW then added Enterprises on to the end.

Another idea is to use a favorite animal that you like. One idea a friend had was to use Big Bear, but that may be confused with a city in southern California.

Could you charaterize your company in some words, philosophy/vision. Any requirements.
This makes it alot easier to give some ideas.

Misnomer Studios. Cause we named it about 5 times but they were all wrong ;)

I think it should be a maximum of 3 syllables long (the main part, ie Mis-no-mer) and it should roll off the tounge.

Psychologically I wouldn't call it mis-no as these two mean some sort of "No", "Deny" somewhat hostile.
I would choose a name that people can abstract to terms like "dreaming", "creation" or "design" that
gives a sense of quality of design. For all outsiders a name like you chooses has no meaning at all, it's not remarkable and then people will not remember and tend to forget.

Better choose something people can associate with something people can remembern easily, a picture, a nice feeling, a common childhood experience etc., something positive like "Looking Glass" or "Dreamcatcher".
They're booked, but what about "Golden Oak" for an adventure company or "ColorFX", "Tale of Dream" or "Magic Touch". Haven't checked these.

When founding a company a couple of questions should arise (to create corporate identity and attitude):

What type of games do you plan to create ?
Which market (geographic/adults-kids)?
What are the core competencies ?
Company philosophy (for employees/for customers) ?
domain available?

The answers will you also help to create a consistent "look", to create logos that match, websites and more.

This is just my personal opinion to help a bit,

Well don't call it "Gameing Company" since you spelt Gaming wrong. Make sure you spell check your decision before buying the domain name.

I got the name of mine from combinging an adjective and a noun (animals are easiest to work with) to get "Plastic Piranha".

In the end it just comes down to what you think works as a name.
