Mac Sound???

by Nicholas Driscoll · in ThinkTanks · 10/23/2004 (2:57 pm) · 5 replies

Hi, When I run ThinkTanks on my 1.25 GHz power mac G4 on Mac OS 10.3, There are no sound effects at all. The background music plays, but nothing else. I didn't even know there was music until I saw ThinkTanks running on a PC! The sound files are there in the data folders, but they don't play in the game. If someone could help me out with this, that would be great!

Hi! Had the same problem. Was caused by an incompatible version of OpenAL. After removing OpenAL.framework from /Library/Frameworks/ the ingame sound came back. Reinstalling OpenAL, that came with another Garagegames game didn't harm anyway. Now sound works as supposed. Hope this will help you!

I'm having the same problem in Tiger (10.4.1) I'm a little reluctant to trash OpenAL because of the effect it may have on other games. Is there any other solution that would involve only altering something in the ThinkTanks folder?
TIA.

Hi Jeff,

after installing Tiger the problem was back on my system too. So I looked for OpenAL on my system. Even worse, the actual installation of the OpenAL Framework is now in /System/Library/Frameworks. But once again removing the original Apple OpenAL Framework and installing the OpenAL Package, that came with "Dark Horizons- Lore" solved the problem completeyl and had no side effects to other games or apps I have installed. (At least I didn't notice any.)
It's on you to decide if you dare... ;-)

Kind regards,
Christian

Thanks Christian. When I feel brave enough and confident that Tiger is working properly, I'll give it a try (keeping a backup of the original Apple OpenAL of course).

Thank you, Thank You, Thank you,

Your are a bloody genius. I trashed the OpenAL Package as you said and then downloaded the Dark Horizons Demo and installed it. After it intsalled the 1600+ items for it's own game the system then asked me to install the OpenAL package and everything was back to normal. One thing I would add to your instruction set. Make sure you dig deep enough into the /System/Library/Frameworks folder to get the REAL OpenAL packaage and not the alias you will find along the way. Fortunaley I noticed the little bent arrow.

But your patch did work and you are right nothing now seems out of place. Though for most people digging around in the System folder isn't something they want to do.

Thank you
Mark
