Chapter 15 - why can't I assign Material?

Hi,
I've made a vehicle model with MS3D, exported it as a wavefront file, loaded it into UVMapper, make a new UV map, saved texture as a bmp file, opened the bmp in paint shop pro, outlined the sections using the pen tool, filled the sections using a variety of colors and textures(I'm experimenting), save as a jgp file.
Then started up MS3D, created new material from the jpg(I see my jpg on the sphere), but I can't for the life of me assign it to the vehicle( the only way to verify is to see it in the 3D frame right). Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Joe

I selected the entire mesh by rubber-banding it with the mouse. All vertices and edges went from white to red.
Then I went to the Materials page of MS3D and, with my texture highlighted in the material selector box, I clicked on the "Assign" button. No luck.
I thought my BMP file might be defective, so I chose a texture file at random from c:\3dgpai1\fps\data\interiors\evil1 and tried again. It didn't map either. Other suggestions?
Thanks for a great book, by the way.

Ok, I am assign the material to the group, I noticed in the groups tab the material name is next to the group in <> brackets. However I can't get it to display in MS( i changed it to textured, clicked on it, pretty much whatever I could try). I tried exporting to a Torque dts file but when I displayed it with a show server the skin still was not displayed. Thanks,
Joe

After you have assigned the material to the group, put your pointer in the 3D viewing window and right-click the mouse.
The top four items in the pop-up menu are
Wireframe
Flat Shaded
Smooth Shaded
Textured
Smooth Shaded will probably have a checkmark beside it. Click on Textured, the checkmark will move to Textured, and you will be able to see your vehicle skin.
It's one of those things that makes you slap your forehead and go "Tch - boy was I dumb."
