Manual LODs on segmented characters

Hi all,

I'm using max6 and it seems that applying multiRes to export LODs seems very difficult (i've tried several times and it always quits with an error) so I hope anybody can help me out on doing manual LODs.

I've looked around in the forums and I found topics about manual LODs but most of them are 'skinned' together (using the Skin modifier), either as a continuous mesh or segmented.

Now I'm not sure how to do this but my character is a segmented mesh (where the head is seperated by the torso and arms, etc. in individual meshes) character and I would like to just bind them with the bone, thus I won't need to 'skin' them. How should I do the LODs manually?

I'm guessing that I will need to snapshot each mesh, collapse a MultiRes modifier to it (reducing the polys) and change the names corresponding the detail markers (head40, arms40, etc) and export. Is this right? Does anybody have experience with this?
