Office Chair Racing!

by N · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 07/07/2004 (1:15 pm) · 60 replies

I'm working on a game called Office Chair Racing:

A unique racing game where you race office chairs down the office halls, eventually working your way up to CEO where you get the big executive chair. Includes special occupations such as a plumber, who rides a toilet.

Thanks to Will Harrison, Lee Garner, George "Creator" Goldstien, and my friend who wishes to remain anonomous for making some of the 3D models in the game, and to Dave Heil, who has offered to help with some of the more advanced programming.

So far I have implemented:
TGELobby
Timer
Countdown clock at beginning of race

I have tested it with 3 people so far.

Expect a demo soon. Technical Difficulties - I don't like Milkshape!

Well, I made some office chairs for Niko along time ago (for this game idea)... he didn't threaten to hurt my dog or anything, lol.... :)

Niko, you should submit this idea/design docs to the Game in a Day thing.

I'd like to do some chair models on this project. (I don't want a job, I just want to give some chairs)

I've got 3 ideas cooking in my head right now, which I'll probably model. If you don't want them, I can just add them to my portfolio.

@ Will: I don't know. Right now this is the only real TGE Chair Racing game. I probably will submit it though.

@ George: That would be great.

I finished a basic one. It's about 580 tris (I think). Should it be less than that?

What would a target count be?

I don't know. I plan to have up to 10 people in a race. 500-ish sounds pretty good.

If you can't post it anywhere, email me, my email's in my profile.

Just wanted to drop a note saying I've been following this for months and can't wait to see it completed :)

Anyone have a tutorial on changing how TGE renders things?

Stock TGE is kind of dark and gloomy. How do I change the way TGE renders things so I get more of a birght, cartoony look. Marble Blast is close to what I'm looking for, bright and cartoony.

Will Harrison, are the chair models that you sent me set up for Torque? Do you have the mount nodes and stuff already on them?

Cool. Thanks.

Does anyone have any info on bright, cartoony rendering? I would really like it in the demo on Monday.

I don't have 3DS Max. I can't currently afford it. I can use Blender or Milkshape, so if possible, please try to use one of these. (Or give me $3,000 dollars, if you really want to.

My email contained a .3ds AND a .max model. Just check again.

Huh? You mean you never tried them in Torque? Doh!
Uh, I never put any mount nodes on them, but if you open them in milkshape you can easily add them.... if you still have the models, I don't have em anymore.... there was two: 1 regular office chair, 2 a stool with wheels...

Lighting Pack!!! ...please tell me you've heard of this!! You can download the demo and do all your work in it (load models into it, change scripts, etc.) and then buy it when you're ready... i.e. you don't have to buy it, to see how it works with your game.

Anther option is go into the property editor box on the side in TGE and go to the "Sky" or "Lighting" object (I cant remember exactly).... and then increase the "Ambient" light setting..... for example: 255 255 255 = RGB at max brightness, know what I mean?

Will, you only sent me the .dts models. Do you still have the .ms3d models?

I'll try the lighting pack, thanks.

This kind of died because I didn't have time for it.
Now I have plenty of time.

I'm just wondering:

Based on the idea, if done well, would people pay $15-$20 for this?

Absolutely!

The demo will decide on that, but it sounds really promising, so Im going to say maybe.

I think i'd pay 15 buks for that. If it's good that is.... but the idea does sound pretty awesome.
