The book and the upcoming Torque Shader engine

by Philippe DA SILVA · in Torque Game Engine · 06/30/2004 (1:04 am) · 4 replies

Hi guys,

I wonder if anyone would know if the book could be used in conjonction with the upcoming Torque Shader Engine.

As far as I know, the Torque Shader Engine doesn't change the core of the Torque Game Engine but only changes the graphics layer to provide the last graphics to the engine.

Thus, the book should be usable with the Torque Shader Engine.

Anyone could comment on that?

Thanks,

Philippe

Hi Philippe,
The TSE is just a new rendering engine to support modern cards. Everything in 3dgpai1 will still be current. There may be a few small changes but most will be exactly the same.

Modelling
Terrain (May be improved)
Torque scripting

You will need to learn to use shaders if you want to implement them but apart from that not a lot will change. If you haven't bought 3dgpai1 yet then do so, it's a great book. The only area that was lacking was animation but that is because Milkshape isn't great at it so you can't say much!

Thank you very much FruitBatInShades (what a name ;-))!

I actually purchased the book before asking this question. And I agree with you: it is a TGE MUST HAVE!!!

Thank you also for the link provided. Very helpfull as it answered my implicit question: should I go for TSE now or wait for a complete release? and the answer is I should wait.

If you can afford it, get it now, it is cheaper. You can still develop the core of the game and just deal with a few bugs over the next few months. They won't affect the rest of the game creation, just might have a few rendering difficulties until they are sorted out, and you'll be helping garage build a better product :o)

Hehe... Are you paid for saying so Fruit?!? ;-)

I think I'll wait for the next major announcement on TSE before making my decision... I don't want to manage at early stages all the bugs around new products. I see TSE in its current stage as an alpha release and I want the first beta.
