Reusing animations

by Erik Madison · in Artist Corner · 04/01/2004 (4:25 pm) · 3 replies

I'm considering dumping Max in the near future, mainly since I may lose legal access soon... However, I extensively use bip files to save/reuse animations, and I don't know any other method. I'm aware of bvh, but I've heard it tends to lose a bit when reused.
My question is, what do users of other modelers do? I'm probably leaning towards Gamespace, but may consider blender as well. Converting my existing models over is not a question, only the saving of animations.

As Far as I know BVH is it. There are other mocap data formats but I am not sure how you go about handling them in MAX. You might need plugins. I know Filmbox has some solutions for animation data but they probably cost as well.

I personally haven't BVH mess up but thats only within MAX.

You can convert the .bip to FBX using the FBX plugin which is free. That way you can port them over to any other package. Read the list of supported functions tho on the kaydara site.

I work regularly with both Max and Maya. FBX has been a good solution for transfering models and animations between the two programs. If I'm working only in Maya, I've used its animExport/Import function to move animations from once to another. It can be a bit finicky about naming conventions and selection order, but it works quite well.
