Ok, there has been a really good discussion about a modelling contest in the Private SDK forums that needs to be moved out where others can access it. So, until GG officially moves the thread this should get you up to speed:

It looks like there is going to be a nice little pick-up contest to kinda get the ball rolling for this. Here is the details so far:
Theme: "Thing from the Deep - Fantasy or Real"
Polycount Limit: 500
Texture Limit: 1 256x256 texture (jpeg or png)
Model Format: 3ds
Deadline: 3/31/2004

Themes for the contest are a necessity. I think you should also put some guidelines on the models. I don't work with 3dsmax, but maybe limit the poly count, require it to have the appropriate animations (be it a character or a vehicle or what-not), require it to have LoD, or whatever.
I think you should open it up to other areas of art: interiors for one. Maybe textures and skins.
