Screen resolution problem after update to Mac OSX .3.2
by TankGirl · in ThinkTanks · 01/27/2004 (12:30 pm) · 10 replies
Hi all,
Ever since I updated to Panther (X.3.2), I am stuck with a TT screen resolution of 800 x 600 on my 20" Cinema display. If I change the resolution to any of the other supported monitor settings (for example, 1024 x 768) the game crashes when trying to enter.
I had no problems with the resolution switching on my Powerbook with the same versions of game (1.1) and OS.
I have trashed all components of TT 1.1 and re installed, same problem.
This problem does not appear with any other game or application and manually selecting resolutions in the OS does not cause problems either.
Help?
Thanks,
TG

Have the same problem like Tankgirl. When changing resolution in ThinkTanks to anything other than 800x600 the game crashes when trying to switch resolutions. This problem exists only in Panther. But I have the same problem with BTV from http://www.bensoftware.com/. It also crashes when trying to switch screen resolution. And again the problem didn't exist in Jaguar. I'm using ATI Radeon 7000 and now 8500. No relieve after updating drivers and firmware. Any hint or suggestion? Is beeing worked on the problem? Please!

Hey guys. Old thread but wanted to comment. We are looking to release an update to ThinkTanks sometimes early in the next year and resolution switching issues is one thing we will address. Unfortunately, every time apple updates it's os, it also updates all it's drivers and so we end up getting hit with a new set of compatibility issues. Hopefully we can deal with this on the next iteration. I will consult this thread for email addresses if we need people to help test...

Upgrade to Mac OS 10.3.6. This will solve all your problems ;-)

no, the OS upgrade didn't change anything.
But I found another solution.
The problem only seems to occure in dual screen mode. (which is my default set up)
Forcing my system to singe screen, enables me to switch resolution in TT without crash.
I used ATI monitors for this. Not a beautifull workaroung, but it works.
Kind regards!

I have this problem to... I have an Apple PowerBook 12" the current superdrive model. (aka Rev C) I run the software update daily, but I can only play at full resolution in fullscreen mode. if I try it in windowed, I get some really freaky, unplayable results. So I have to wait for TT 2? Is there any workaround or scripts that can fix it?

As I said, I'm not sure this will fix your problem. It sounds like you are having issues in windowed mode, for example, which is odd and possibly not related to resolution switching. For example, what might be happening is that when you try to play "full resolution" in a window, the game cannot do it (it can't run full resolution in a window, because there'd be no room for the window border) so what it does instead is choose the next lower resolution. Perhaps this resolution is a weird aspect ratio, leading to the "freaky unplayable results" you are speaking of (would have to get more info to know for sure).

@Ben - we are close to releasing a new update. I can't be sure that it will fix your problems, but I think it might. One thing I have spent a lot of time tweaking is a "scalable gui". What this means is that when you go into the shell, it won't force you into 800x600. That means you can run the game at any resolution and it won't force a resolution switch when you go between the game and the shell. If you run at something that isn't 4:3 aspect ratio, it will "letter box" the screen so you can still play at that resolution without distorting the display. As I said, I'm not sure this will fix your problem. What happens if I try to play TT at a resolution other than 800x600, I get a window that looks like the size of 640x480 but within the window, the game looks like 1024x768 cropped to the size of the window. Which happens to be exactly what it looks like at 640x480. So, I guess it switches to 640 if I try to play it in 1024, and it happens that 640 acts very oddly on my computer, for example, the chat box comes up in the lower left hand corner, and I can't see the message HUD at all, just the playerlist and another script on the other corner. And since I have no desire of playing it in 640, I seems that there is no problem at all, except that it switches from 1024 to 640 instead of 800. Thanks for the help!Ben

After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) the Game crashes no longer when switching resolutions. Even in dual screen environments. Now I can play Hi-Res. :)

I have a mac mini that only supports a 800x600 resolution and whenever i enter marbleblast gold the same thing happens as when i set my screen resolution higher on my computer. Is there any way to enter marble blast with a 800x600 resolution instead of a higher one.
Baba
It seems to be triggered by my changing from full screen to the small screen mode (and back again).
Regardless of my systm or TTapplic resolution settings when I go to small screen and back again I either get:
1) a low resolution graphic image that cuts off the bottom of the screen (cannot see chat or any in game messages on the bottom of the screen. (no child safe filter is not on).
or
2) a small TT screen framed in black that also cuts off the messages/ chat.
never had this problem before Panther.
Help???
Thank you,
Baba
