New nVIDIA driver not Torque compatible
by Trent Reimer · in Hardware Issues · 01/08/2004 (4:14 pm) · 7 replies
The newest unified drivers from nVIDIA create framerate problems for the Torque.
This problem has been noted by members of nVIDIA's nvnews.net forums, the GG forum and the Game Beavers forums so it is not an isolated issue.
Whether the problem is largely on nVIDIA's end or on ours I don't pretend to know but we will want to find out and correct the problem ASAP as nVIDIA is a popular card with gamers and developers alike.
Specifics: Framerates drop from 100% - 500% using the version 50+ drivers compared to previous versions. You will notice the most dramatic difference when viewing players, including your own. For users with systems under 2GHz the results can become unplayable. If you hit F8 and take the camera away from all players the framerate begins to climb again.
This issue can be replicated with the Linux drivers, it does not appear to be Windows specific.
How do we get word to our friends, the GG staff?

The problem is you MUST uninstall your existing driver first from safe mode. If you just install over top they get all dorked up. Let me know if this solves your problem. post here.

I understand the uninstallation / installation proceedure but it doesn't seem to be the issue here. Uninstalling the existing driver first does not solve the problem.

Did you uninstall from safe mode? That seems odd that they must come out in safe mode.- Brett

This can't be the root of the problem however since installing pre-version 50 drivers the same way solves the framerate issue.

@Brett - Actually I just followed the manufacturer's directions verbatim which uses nVIDIA's built-in uninstall. It automatically reboots to 16 color display so you can install any new drivers from there. This can't be the root of the problem however since installing pre-version 50 drivers the same way solves the framerate issue.

It seems to be compiled vertex array related (disabling it fixes the problem).

Just posted about this same (?) issue under the technical/OpenGL category...It seems to be compiled vertex array related (disabling it fixes the problem).
