How long until we can purchase SDK documentation?
by Erik Yuzwa · in Torque Game Engine · 12/19/2003 (6:57 am) · 30 replies
I've noticed that in the "My Garage" section there's the (eventual) option of purchasing what looks like a hardcopy version of the SDK documentation.
Any ideas when that'll be available? I'd love to get my hands on it..
thanks!

Im hoping for under $10, since it doesnt make much sense otherwise...

Purchase? Is torque the only product out there that does not come with documentation, and you have to purchase documentation seperately? Im hoping for under $10, since it doesnt make much sense otherwise...

The engine reference comes with the engine source, and contains the bulk of docs. The hardcopy is by and large a collection and unification of a lot of tutorials on basic in-engine tasks - stuff that is better suited to being in a book. If I was to guess, I'd say that the book is going to cost less than $50. And the engine reference will always be free, afaik...

You're thinking of different docs. :)The engine reference comes with the engine source, and contains the bulk of docs. Seems to me that nearly every product on the market has additional cost documentation. As proof, just look at the technology section in the bookstore.-Jeff Tunnell GG

Practically NOTHING comes with printed hardcopy documentation anymore. Especially development tools only come with electronic documentation and printed manuals are extra.

But that's crediting myself with way too much determination right now. After all, I have a screenplay to finish.

Instead of "Wow! You mean I have to PAY for documentation!!!", my first thought when I saw that was "maybe it'll get me off my ass and doing something other than simply loading the Bravetree models into Torque each time I compile the HEAD."But that's crediting myself with way too much determination right now. After all, I have a screenplay to finish.

I think of this doc as the same thing. (Although I am hoping to pay as little as I possible can for it :) )

I am looking forward to seeing these docs. When I purchased my C++ compilier years ago I had to fork over 40+ bucks to get a decent C++ book.I think of this doc as the same thing. (Although I am hoping to pay as little as I possible can for it :) )

Also, I'll take the instruction book with me when I go do something else (like visit a friend) and read pieces of it here and there when I get a chance. Can't do that easily with online documentation.

I can't help it. I like dead trees. I love to fondle their pressed, chemically treated skin as I try to hunt down a piece of info. Sometimes I get annoyed about books not being "online" and instantly accessible, but when it boils down to a choice between paper or digital, I'd rather have paper. Also, I'll take the instruction book with me when I go do something else (like visit a friend) and read pieces of it here and there when I get a chance. But since this'll be a hardcopy w/ cd included? Why have code in book when you have to retype it on the comp? :D

Ah ok. I had the wrong price down to, I meant under $50 :) I put $10, yikes! Hard copy yeah. But a reference books isnt what I call a manual of sorts :)But since this'll be a hardcopy w/ cd included? Why have code in book when you have to retype it on the comp? :D

Good point...Most tech books nowadays have a CD that includes source code to the examples they have...of course, if it has anything to do with the engine source, that might be a problem...

I personally feel typing it up yourself makes you more familiar with it. I always type up the examples in books.

I like hard copies for reading in the "library" but now that I got 802.11a I can take my laptop in there and read all the online stuff I want ;-)

If the book will feature usefull information that cannot be found on the GG website, sure why not. I'll invest some money. After all, supporting the GG community is good for all of us ;)

Anyone here complaining about the price, then I challenge you to sit down and try and write your own documentation. Some documentation is better than none right? and so what if it's 29.95 that's still pretty darn cheap.

Devon, I agree with you. 29.95 isn't that much especcially if you consider the time needed to write and format decent documentation. Try buying Borland manuals, or take a subscription to MSDN...

GG is free to sell whatever they want.

Well, MSDN its a world, dont compare..GG is free to sell whatever they want.

I would be happy for pdf. The price sounds good, so when can I buy it?
