creating a good looking fire

Is there any tutorial to create a realistic fire? I followed the old videotutorials and all I get is a shaky pink cloud (not very different from tutorial result) that can only be considered fire if you have a tolerant and open mind.

It is for an open source project, so I was looking for some free solution.

Find some decent looking flame textures and either use them as an emitter or create a static object with animated flame textures.

Can you elaborate a bit on which kind of fire you are trying to create?

It really depends on the type of fire you want to make, creating a muzzle flash is very different from creating a torch which is again different from creating a campfire which is again fundamentally different from creating a scene where a building is on fire. Can you elaborate a bit on which kind of fire you are trying to create?

It is a camp fire.

Michael Hall was nice enough to post script + images of an unused fire/smoke from his Kaboom pack:

You can stack a fire, smoke and embers particle on top of one another to create a nice campfire effect.Michael Hall was nice enough to post script + images of an unused fire/smoke from his Kaboom pack:
