Hi my name is chris and i have a question about a product of yours although it is not directly through your company so i am not sure you will be able to help but i have been unable to find another help source so i figured i'f give it a shot. I bought the book 3D programming all in one second edition by Kenneth C. Finney and it comes with a disc with the torque game engine 1.4 and in the system requirements it ask for you to have 128 MB RAM. As well as several versions of windows up to XP. i have an alienware MX7 laptop about 2 years old that meets the system requirements. It has windows 7 but has the option of running programs in previous windows versions as well as i have downloaded the windows virtual pc and set up and xp version. When i put the disc in the book says a window should open with instillation and other instructions. this does not happen but the disc shows up in my computer and has all the files mentioned. the tge.exe file is in it and can be clicked on. when i attempt to run this file which i believe should open the torque engine a black command prompt screen flashes in and out of the screen and nothing opens up. i've exhausted the different ideas i have had to try and get it running so i'm coming here. i understand if this is not a direct product and so you can't help me especially since it is an older version. that you for your time and any help you might be able to provide. i can offer further information if i have left anything out.

I haven't tried the software that comes with that book myself, however I do know how Torque operates. See if there's an autorun.exe when you view the CD-ROM contents and if so double-click on it to run it. Hopefully that'll get you started.

If not then copy the entire CD-ROM contents into a new directory of your choosing on your hard drive. You could create a C:\TorqueBook\cdrom\ directory path and copy the entire CD-ROM contents into there by selecting everything you see in the CD-ROM Windows explorer view, right-click then Copy, and then go back to C:\TorqueBook\cdrom\ and right-click then Paste into there to begin copying the disc's contents.

From there then you can try running TGE.exe executable to see what happens. Probably runs the actual game engine demo that is a starting place to follow along with the book.

Note that the Torque Game Engine that comes with that book is very old as it has been discontinued and no longer supported by anybody really. Sadly that particular engine was not open sourced, however Torque 3D (the successor to both TGE and TGEA/TSE) was open sourced and effectively free for all.

i fully intend to update and use the newest one but i am brand new to this and have no previous knowledge so i figure it won't hurt even though this is an older version to use the book to learn and at least get a base idea and since this is the engine the book uses i figure better not to try and use it to learn with the newest one. i will try what you recommend and reply again. any other ideas for where to learn and maybe a guide to the newer one would be highly appreciated. i do have a little base knowledge in programming.
