Character tutorial?

by Rick Austinson · in Torque 3D Professional · 03/23/2014 (6:51 pm) · 113 replies

Is there a good character tutorial for 3D Studio MAX out there somewhere? I have been digging for a bit, but was wondering if anyone had any known resources. I am attempting to make my own character for a game using the 3D Action Adventure Kit, unfortunately there resources are for Maya.

Thanks,
Rick

EDIT: Finally got it working, will post updated tutorial and notes soon(TM).

Hey, not doing it in blender :P I'll be a max-user till the day I die.

Yes thats where I was confused - I've known about select and link all along, but the tutorials just gave me a picture of the schematic view and said "it should look like this" nothing ever mentioned the use of select and link, thank you!

@Kevin Mitchell

I'm following another tutorial at the moment(linked by someone else in the thread) and I wanted to add in that it might be helpful when you make yours to at least to go over bone structure and bone-naming conventions. I understand that stuff pretty well so far but I more or less had to cross-reference several different tutorials to come to that conclusion.

I'm making he vid now but your bone naming does not matter the mesh naming does, the links does. I'll post it soon.

Interesting video, is there supposed to be sound to it? I can't really tell for sure what is going on.

Sorry I have not had success with my mic as it's so low.

All right, I'll have to watch it full-screen a few times and take some notes.

Hey, did you create that RPG Engine Tool Kit? I had never seen that before on my various sojourns through the store, and it is EXACTLY what my team is looking for! One question, though: is it possible to make it run under XP?

Yes, It runs on what ever t3d can work on.

I'm working through the tutorial posted by Alphaslime (http://www.davidjsushil.com/tutorials/characters.pdf) and it has been pretty good up until about page 8, where it says:

"Like every other model, we need to renumber and embed the shape. So make sure you’ve selected our scuttlebot, and click the Renumber Selection button from the Utilities panel. In the Renumber dialog box, type 2 and click OK. This renames our scuttlebot to “scuttlebot2”. Then, click the Embed Shape button, but only one time. "

Renumber Selection and Embed Shape are features that appear to be missing from 3D Studio MAX as of version 6 at the latest(I could not find them in 6 or 2009) And as such I am basically stuck, unable to proceed.

Just want to jump in here and say that you can now send us a pull-request for content to be added to the T3D wiki. Just fork a copy of this repository, make a new branch, add your content, and submit a pull request!

The SC will be announcing this when we make our intro blog... sometime in the future :P.

Well I think we'd all appreciate some character documentation! So you should see some requests for that.

So I finally found the Renumber Shape & Embed Functions - silly question: does the bounding box need to be an editable mesh, or should it remain a box?

the one for characters never worked for me since they make on via code

I was able to finish the tutorial and export a character, but it doesn't work and doesn't give me any errors. It just fails to load Torque.

That's where I am now.

can i get your character?

Sure, tutorial character

And char I can't figure out how to export properly.

Its got placeholder textures at the moment, still waiting on my texture artist for that part while I try to nail down a process.

By the way, Kevin, I already bought your RPG kit, cannot wait to try it out!

I suppose I shouldn't be terribly surprised over the corruption. Can you give me any hints on whats causing it?

Thanks, I think the RPG kit will be a really rock-solid base and allow me and my team to focus more on the things we're actually good at.
