AC3D and torque?

by Frogger · in General Discussion · 10/19/2003 (6:35 pm) · 2 replies

I was wondering about Ac3d working with torque. I got it with my linux so i thought it would be great if i could use it in torque and modeling. just get some opinions about it.

Whoa, this is a late response but I was just researching this myself. www.garagegames.com/index.php?sec=mg&mod=resource&page=view&qid=4490 probably sums it up. You should be able to build static models and then export them to another modeller which has a Torque exporter written for it. There's also documentation you can read if you are inclined to try writing your own exporter for AC3D.

Blender and Maya (which definitely support animation) also run on linux and Mr. Urquhart's exporter seems to be making serious headway so there are some viable alternatives being developed for Linux users. Much thanks to James, GG and the community for that.

Yet another late reply! But... was doing a search for threads relating to AC3D and found this one.. so I thought I'd chime in... Better late than never!

As of of the time I'm typing this, AC3D is up to version 5.0. I have to say, I *really* like this program.

It's very easy to use. Texturing is great and its UV editor is the most intuitive and easy to figure out of any 3D modeler I've ever used. I didn't have to read a line of documentation to figure it out. I was able to recreate some objects I'd taken a lot longer to create in other programs in a fraction of the time - I know that sounds cliche'.. but it's also true :-)

Now... I realize it's not designed for animation. For me, this is fine because I'm not really an animation person.. and as of right now I'm creating graphics to block out areas and set up my environments - not necessarily final assets. Though, some of them might become that.. who knows.

There are things that I'm having a little more trouble learning, but it's just a matter of finding the right tool for the job. So far I've found something to accomplish every other task I needed to do... In this case, it's verifying that the alpha channel on a texture is, in fact, alpha-masking. I know the support is there.. just have to figure it all out, and I'm real close.

The other down-side is that there is no Torque support that I could find. No built-in, or plugins, etc. Unless someone has something that I haven't found yet.

In any case, I think it's a great program, among the easiest I've ever used. Yes, the path getting from AC3D > torque isn't as straight-forward as MS3D to Torque.. but, then, few programs have direct-to-Torque support.. I'll just add this to the list that don't :-)
